Martha: Well I guess your mother never told you about me, because she and I had a falling out when I married Sam and moved to Australia, before you were born! So you see, Sam was your uncle. Small World isn't it?

Your mother thought you should know the truth, because of you being in the hospital with Leonard Simms. She was afraid you would find out from him, (if he should ever stop repeating those numbers long enough) and he would tell you about Sam (being as he was his friend.)
He knows about your mother and I being sisters.
