Lost all around us?
Hi guys,
In a book I'm reading at the moment an old moneylender called Anayona lives with her sister Lizaveta and the protagonist Raskolnikov sees that it would be better if the world was without Anayona. So he goes to her house with an axe and gets rid of her. He goes into her bedroom and takes her money and jewellery intending to give it to people to justify (in his mind) the murder. But as he comes out of her room he sees her sister standing there, horrified. So the only thing for him to do is to kill her.
Sound familiar?
Even the names are similar.
Anayona - Ana Lucia
Lizeveta - Libby
Anyway, I thought that this was an interesting point. Maybe the writers were influenced by the book?
Thanks, THS.

No, its just something I wanted to read. But I thought I should point it out. (Brainwave) Ben reads a Dosteyevsky book in the hatch! I don't know if it was crime and punishment. But if it was thats either amazing research or a huge coincidence.

Svidrigaylov on death
"...ghosts are, so they say, bits and pieces of other worlds, the beginning of them. There is no reason, of course, why a healthy man should see them, because a healthy man is, above all, a man of this earth and he must, therefore, only live the life of this earth for the sake of order and completeness. But as soon as he falls ill, as soon as the normal earthly order of his organism is disturbed, the possibility of another world begins to become apparent, and the more ill he is, the more closely does he come in touch with the other world, so that when he dies, he goes straight to the other world. I worked it out a long time ago. If you believe in a future life, you could also believe in that."
"I do not believe in a future life," Raskolnikov said.
Svidrigaylov sat lost in thought.
"And what," he said suddenly, "if there are only spiders there, or something of the sort?"

Re: Lost all around us?
No I have only read one book by Dostoevsky, and that is called Demons or some translate is as the Possessed.
It is one of those books that kills you for the first 100 pages, strange names and a bit boring. Then all of a sudden the book comes alive and the rest of the book is quite gripping.
Well worth borrowing from your local library to fill in some spare hours!

At http://www.online-literature.com/dostoevsky/
you can read on line the following Dostoevsky works

They also have an extensive library of many author's works who are now in the public domain. That is no longer under copyright restrictions.
A great site if you want to read some works and see why they are famous.

Re: Lost all around us?
Speaking of books. I just finished "Flashforward" written by Robert J. Sawyer. It was mentioned on a LOST forum and has quite a few tie ins with the show as far as time, consciousness, fate versus free will, etc. The book starts out with pushing a button. Sound like some tv show?
