Meet the Liger
Patrick the Liger

This isn't a joke or photoshop job. A liger is a cross between a male lion and female tiger. They get enormous because they lack a growth inhibiting gene. Below is the link to the National geographic site with more photos. Check out the name of the preserve where Patrick the Liger lives. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/08/photogalleries/ligers_dynamite/index.html
Some you tube footage of Ligers.

Dude! Only this morning I was thinking about ligers and tigons and, first thing I see over here is your post. Scary...

I generally agree with that sentiment Smokette, but I don't think a liger is going to upset the balance of nature. As far as I know there isn't anything artificial going on here. It's possible that this could have already occurred naturally at a time when lions and tigers habitats overlapped. Wolves and coyotes have been know to interbreed in the wild as have horses and donkeys (the mule) in captivity. The offspring are usually sterile so nature has its own way correcting the error. See F1 Hybrid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F1_hybrid. Interesting stuff.

I get what you're saying. I'm also not a fan of messing with animals or making a spectacle of them. I don't think that just because something can be done, it should be. I'm not trying to get on a soapbox or anything. There are certainly worse things (than crossbreeding species) in the world to worry about, unless someone tries to breed a human with an animal . . .

I totally agree with you there! I actually felt a little sorry for the big cat. It probably would not make it in the wild - totally dependent on us humans. Of course, it could totally eat us too.

That's very profound Nino. So what your saying is that each species has it's own cross to bear.

Re: Meet the Liger
I'm waiting for the moment scientists finally stop beating around the bush and just get on and take the plunge.
You know what I am talking about.
Humans mating with the animal kingdom.
So we can breed humans with sharks to make people that can swim fast underwater. And breed humans with birds so there are people that can soar through the clouds.
Darwin Schmarwin.
