The Three Redshirts - EP12
For those of you who don’t know, the term “redshirts” means “extras”. And you might have been wondering the same thing I was when Daniel left the beach in the Zodiac raft: Why the hell did three redshirts get a seat on the first ride back to the freighter? Shouldn’t it have been someone more…. Important???
The first trip from the beach had Sun, Jin, three redshirts, and Daniel. We know who the Oceanic 6 are, and they certainly aren’t any of the redshirts. So what is going to happen with these redshirts?
Well, I don’t know how it is going to happen, but I think these three redshirts are the individuals Jack refers to when he says that 8 people survived the initial plane crash.
Remember, Aaron wasn’t born yet, so when they say that 8 survived the crash, they mean Jack, Sayid, Hurley, Sun, Kate, and three more people, hence the three redshirts.
Who else could they be referring to? Nobody comes to my mind. Jin isn’t one. Claire isn’t one. These people obviously had to be people that could not have been covered up by the elaborate lie. And the fact that these three redshirts are currently off the island, that makes them the prime candidates.

I think the reason there is three red shirts on the ship is that theyre going to die. Except obviously for sun. Maybe the ship will come back and Sun will be taken back. Then the freiter will be blown up.

Good points. I didn't pick that up. The presence of the redshirts show there will be a battle on the freighter. Of course the redshirts will die.

I agree with THS and tracker, Irocs, the redshirts are usually likelyto die... I think the freighter's going to blow up.
Good catch, I didn't notice the shirt colours...I think Jin was in red too?

I think Jin was in a Greenish-grey colored shirt because when it got wet it was almost a black color.
Anyways, I agree with everyone thinking the freighter will blow up and the redshirts will go. Gotta get rid of them somehow I guess lol...I thought the same thing though when all those extras got on that boat to go to the freighter hahaha..."why are THEY getting on that boat??? What about Rose and Bernard? Or Juliette?" LOL

Okay, I wanna clear this up for those who are confused - the term "red shirt" is not actually referring to what they're wearing. It comes from the old Star Trek series, where a couple main characters would go down to a planet and bring along two or three security officers you'd never seen before (whose uniforms were red), and since Captain Kirk and Spock could never die, the "red shirts" always did. So basically, if you see somebody you've never seen before in the scene, the odds are fairly good something bad is going to happen to them.
Hope this explains things a bit.

Whilst I do think the Freighter will get blown up, I am not sure all the "red shirts" that journeyed to it are dead. I actually thought it was a nice touch that not just the main characters were first on the boat. Just because we never got to meet these redshirts and background Losties, it doesn't mean they don't all want to get home too!
Sending the background Losties to The Freighter just to blow them up, for me, needs to be justified in some way - otherwise it's just a needless cull and actually pretty harsh.

If that is part of the Oceanic cover story, then who is important enough to mention they lived for a little while? The pilot maybe?
One could be Boone, he did make that mayday call that went though to someone.

Boone's mayday call only got as far as the other side of the Island. . . where he communicated with Bernard (as occurred in the episode The Other 48 Days).
I seem to recall that Darlton, in a podcast in an interview or whatever, seemed a little taken aback about the importance placed upon these unnamed survivors. The way I took it was that the Oceanic 6 claimed some people survived the crash and then died afterwards because it was a more realistic story.
Jack stated at the press conference in There's No Place Like Home that a fair number of people got out of the plane and remained in the ocean for quite some time. It was only eight of them that made it to land. And only six of them that survived to rescue. That, to me, is just a little more plausible (although it does mean the relatives of those made-up survivors that didn't make it will have to be provided with extra stories about what became of their loved ones beyond the crash).

Maybe more people do "make it off" but somehow get the chance to stay.
in their fake story, the Oceanic 6 end up on another island where they are discovered by fishermen or something. (This island could be the one we've seen in the past)
I think 2 or 3 extras (could be anyone - redshirts or not) will make it with the O6 to another island, but will have the chance stay there. Remembers there are 2 islands.
babbling, dont know if that made any sense.

I don't think that if there are other survivors they would chose not to come forward. Most people would want a piece of the Oceanic settlement, and wouldn't want their families to worry.
