Sun: "You will want to call me. We share a common interest. You know that we are not the only ones to have left the island"

Widmore: "Why would you want to help me?"

This leads me to conjecture several things:

1)
Widmore remarked to Ben early in the season that he was having
nightmares. This, coupled with the fact that Ben "can't" kill him,
leads me to believe that Widmore once inhabited the Island, but left,
and is trying to get back, like the Oceanic Six. Of course he's chosen
a rather brutal way to go about it - sending in commandos to wipe
everyone else out first. Perhaps Widmore once was the leader of the
Others, and he wound up turning the donkey wheel, so now, like Ben, he
can never go back, but if he can't be there, he'll make sure nobody
else can be there either?

2) Jack remarked to Ben that Sun
blames him for Jin's death. Sun now also controls the Paik Heavy
Industries corporation, using settlement money from Oceanic Airlines to
buy a controlling interest. In the past, Paik and Widmore have
partnered on various enterprises, but I think both Sun and Widmore know
that what Sun is referring to as a common interest is really the
Island.

3) It's possible that Sun knows that Widmore, and not
Jack, was ultiimately responsible for Jin's death. And perhaps she
intends to use the power of the Paik company to punish Widmore for it.
Also possible that Sun is working with Ben on this.

Clearly a
main part of the plot of the coming season(s) will be how the Oceanic
Six plus "Bentham" will manage to return to the Island.

I would add that it very well might be the Oceanic 6, plus Walt and Desmond and even Frank that have to be together to go back to the Island.

And I think a very much align myself with point number one - at the moment anyway!

All this brings up another matter: just WHY does everyone have to return to that damn Island? Haven't they all suffered enough?

Isn't this taking the "free will vs. predestination" debate a bit too far? For what it's worth, I think I weigh in on the side of free will. I'd go as far as to say I don't usually believe there is anything such as fate, other than probabilities based on past conditions and conduct.

I like the motto: "You can't always control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to it".

The characters in LOST are now acting like pitiful scared puppets who can't bring themselves to control how they react to life.

Veefre you make some good points about them not being able to react to life but they live in the Lost universe not the one we live in.

They have some additional pressures that we dont, like long dead fathers appearing and dead friends delivering messages not to mention the haunting nightmares. All of which seem to suggest that returning to the island will ease the suffering of not only them but the friends they left behind.

Or, returning to the Island may mean that they finally die, as they were meant to die in the plane crash in the first place.

I think Sun will turn out to be the 'Judas' of the oceanic six as she wants to get back to the island and is already talking to Widmore about it.

Notice that there have been no flash forwards to their return to the Island - although everything seems to be leading up to that fact.

So, when they return (and they will return), they will either go through more trials of redemption, and then die in peace, or join the Others and achieve a measure of immortality, but only as part of the Island.

This explains why Ben says they take only those that are "worthy". It also explains why only those who were supposed to die on the plane are able to see the ghosts of those who are dead such as Christian Shepherd (or Claire or Charlie).
