I think Ben might be lying

Post by Smokette on Wed Jun 04, 2008 5:49 am

Well, it wouldn't be the first time if he is. When he told Locke that whoever moves the island can't come back, I don't think it was true. I think he knew it was his only chance to get off the island, and he wanted to get off to seek revenge on Widmore.

Hey Smokette!

I agree with you! I think that Ben engineered his escape.

I dont agree that the purpose was to seek revenge on Widmore. I dont think that Ben is motivated by revenge.

For my rationale of why ben is not motivated by revenge please refer to my post "Ben as game theorist".

I think it might be in the big theories section if you feel like checking it out.

Keep em coming.

Although, Ben did say to Keamy, "Not if I find him first." I guess that would play into your game theory though. Or my revenge theory. Smile

Smokette, I believe Ben was aware that the relocation would make it nearly impossible for him to find the island again, without "a man" on the inside... there is no doubt in my mind that he was evicted, but he "always has a plan"...

As for the only chance to leave, do you believe the Orchid was the only gateway? Tom, Ethan and Richard have been to the mainland, and there was evidence of Ben off-island... unless the Orchid is only a one-way ticket?

And Retro, "Ben as game theorist" was a great read.

Unless the way Tom, Ethan, and Richard were getting off the island would be affected by moving the island, then maybe he knew it was his best chance.

Ben was extremely sad about leaving the island. I do not think this was a lie. But as said, Ben always has a plan. And I think due to certain happenings Ben saw an oppurtunity to get back to the island and he is grabbing it

I dont think he is not allowed back, banished or anything.....I see no reason why he would be?

I agree that its probably a matter of not being able to find it again, being as in the dark to its location as Widmore. The 06 are his ticket back but how? Maybe because he knows the island wants them back, if he hangs out with them enough he can hitch-hike so to speak Smile

Ben saying 'I hope you're happy now Jacob' just before he turned the wheel suggested to me that he believed that he would not be coming back.

I do however think as others have pointed out he is going to use the O6 to somehow get back.

SBP I love the image of Ben just kicking back and 'hanging out' with the O6. You know they'd all be whspering behind his back.

Yes, because being kicked in the back would lurch him forward at just the right time to bump into a stack of beans at the supermarket, that would then fall and form a pattern of a map, and show him where the island is.

wow we got it all figured out!!!!

When the hotel clerk asks ben "is this your first time to Tunisia?" he hesitates a moment, then says "No, but its been a while" In that classic Ben way.
I think he has been off the island and back several times just like Alpert.
I don't think he used the wheel to do it though. He or anyone else who did, would have had to have done it before Dharma built the station on top of the "wheel chamber". Unless the vault could transfer a person without needing to spin the wheel.

Wouldn't he have just used the submarine to get off the island before? I agree that he will use the 06 to get back and that is why he was so willing to let them leave

Yes that hotel scene, wasnt he like a VIP member or something?

Maybe there was a way of being transported off the island using the same method that flung him out when he turned the wheel, only this time he cant go back because he doesnt know where or when to go back to.

I would hate for that to be the case. If Ben does get back to the island, we would all look at the writers like "well i thought he couldnt get back on the island." Then the writers only back up would be "well he was lying." ohhhh, no sure if i like it.

but then again you never know.

I think Ben wanted to get off the island so he could go after widmore, so he told Locke he wouldn't be able to come back so that he didn't have to try and convince Locke to let him move the island.

I think John would have done it even if it meant that he couldn't come back because he wants to protect the island, but if Ben was willing to sacrifice himself then he would let him.

Sorry if that makes no sense, I am feeling slightly rambleicious

Re: I think Ben might be lying

It is true that Ben has always had a plan, and he seems to know a lot of what will happen and a lot of this is also guided by "the Rules." There is one thing that Ben did not anticipate...the murder of Alex. Ben never thought it would happen and he actually did love her very much.

At this point, Ben is now willing to pass his position of leader on to Locke. Ben is now concentrating fully on getting revenge for the death of Alex.

I think Ben was telling the truth when he said that the island would not let him come back after turning the wheel. I think this will remain to be true, the island will not let Ben return, just like it would not let Micheal die. The thing is, the island can change its mind.

I think Ben could be helping the O-6 get back for one of two possible reasons. The least likely of which would be redemption. He is trying to get the O-6 back hoping that the island would forgive him and let him return. That or he is just a very loyal follower. Maybe he has been having dreams and the torture won't stop until he helps them get back. Maybe Ben just wants to die now just like Micheal did.

The other reason, and most likely, is that he wants to use the O-6 to help him find Penny. Through them he can find Desmond, and through Desmond he can find Penny.

I think he was crying because he was scared his plan wouldn't work and he wouldn't get back to the island.

And you know he cut his arm, that could have been a painful injury.

Re: I think Ben might be lying

Lost Dbutz, after Ben kills Keamy in the orchid, Locke asks him why he killed his daughter and Ben fires back quickly if I remember correctly, something about how its hard to control your passions when you are facing the killer of your daughter.

I cant get anyone to comment on my post "Ben as a game theorist post", but to me this scene shows to me how ben is using his daughter's death, which he possibly facilitated, to his advantage.

The entire 06, Jack-Hurley-Kate-Sun-Sayid-Aaron are all on the helicopter, not on the boat, Keamy announces the point of the device on his arm, Ben summarily dispatches of him, causing the boat to explode.

I dont know why Ben would want the boat people dead, except that they for the majority seemed hostile towards him. Additionaly it would serve him well to kill Keamey quickly, while he knew the helicopter would still be in the air, leaving it with no place to land.

Notice as well how quickly he is working in the station to access the frozen donkey wheel, he is moving as fast as he can, while the helicopter is in the air.

The point of this is that he is using his daughter's death, to his advantage, he is motivated out of self interest, not out of fury like justice.

I was thinking about the above, Ben plays a direct role in putting Kate, Sayid, Jack, Sawyer, Hurley, on the helicopter...he does not put Sun/Aaron, nor desmond on the helicopter.

I dont know if this affects the reading of my comment, but it might show that Ben wasn't entirely in contol as the comment suggested.
