Anyone heard of this book?

So I’m about 98.457% sure that this wasn’t some dream I had.
Last night I was Playstioning, and while driving across town in GTA4, I started thinking about time travel and in particular the Grandfather Effect that has been discussed quite a bit
For some reason I remembered my best friend from high school and most of college, telling me about this book he read that was about time travel, and how this story was about how to avoid that Gramps paradox. If I remember right, it had to do with something like: I couldn’t go back and prevent myself from getting in my car that day, driving to work and getting in a collision that kills the people in the other car. BUT, I could go back to some random person, in another country even, and have that person prevent my past self from getting in my car that day etc. And somehow that would avoid the paradox.
I have no idea what the name of this book was or who wrote it. I’m not even completely sure it exists. What I do know is that friend of mine was a total electrical-engineering and physics geek and more that likely it was some obscure author I’ve never heard of or since heard of again.
Has anyone else read this or heard of it? Short of googling “time travel book” and shifting through that mess, I’m totally lost.
]That got me thinking about Lost time travel and the whole “You can’t kill me boy” and “He changed the rules” mysteries. And how all these seemingly random people who survived the Oceanic crash are strangely connected to each other through small degrees of separation.
(I’ll add that I personally don’t like the time loop theory, but after I remembered that book, it almost seemed like it could work)
I thought maybe it was Kurt Vonneguts Timequake(I don’t think that it though)and I checked the Wikipedia site for it.

I saw this quote that grabbed my attention:
Most of the small stories in the book center around the depression and sadness wrought by watching oneself make bad choices: people watch their parents die again, drive drunk or cause accidents that severely injure others. At the end of the timequake, when people resume control, they are depressed and gripped by ennui. Kilgore Trout is the only one not affected by the apathy, and thus helps revive others by telling them "You were sick, now you're better, there's work to be done".
First thought: Locke shot and in the pit with Walt looking down.
That’s one more book on my “to read” list now.

Thanks for the link Cosmic. That helped a little. I found that there are way too many stories on that subject for me to have time to track just one of them down.
