I hope you are enjoying the series thus far because:

Episode Synopsis: In this Sun Centric Episode we find out just how far Sun will go to protect the ones she loves. As we all know, the 06 have changed radically since their return home and last season and in 5.1 we got a glimpse of the new, and improved?, Sun. Some truth is shed on Paik industries and the mysterious new character, Christine DeVries, begins to open up about her involvment with Charles Widmore. How did Sun go about buying her father's company out? Read on!

Also, if you wanted to get an idea (to picture in your head as you read) what Christine DeVries looks like, I posted some photos of the actress I would say I had in mind when writing this script. Link: http://www.scribd.com/doc/4775008/Christine-DeVries

I wanted to point out that much like LOST, I use literary references. The title of this one, befitting because SUN is centric and it shows the "rise" of her character, but also because of the context of the book. Here are some of the themes of the book thanks to Wiki:

The novel has heavy undercurrents of suppressed emotions and buried values. Its weary and aimless expatriates serve as metaphors for society's lost optimism and innocence after the war. The topic of war is rarely discussed explicitly by any of the characters. The war is also present as the tragedy that affects the way characters are able to deal with themselves, and post-war society.

One way to read the novel is as an inverted novel of initiation. In traditional initiation stories, a young man leaves his home or community, goes through experiences that change his character or worldview, and returns to take his place in his community as a mature person. Jake hints at the possibility of an escape, of "finding out what it's all about."

If you substitute the instances of "war" with the "island and the war with Widmore/the freighter," it all fits.

Reading 5.3 now, and writing this comment as I go.

- So you've dropped 'Bad Twin' into the official canon Lost universe? Not sure Darlton would love that, but you're evidently playing to the fan crowd again!

- And Mittelwerk is involved too!? FAN-tastic!

- Sayid refers to the "economist". I'm confused. Is it Sun or Mittelwerk he was addressing as an economist? I am assuming he meant Sun and wasn't making a glib comment.

- Just finished the Des/Penny/Sun scene. A criticism: Sun's becoming a robot. She's all about getting the job done. Which is good. But not believable. A brief scene, perhaps with her alone, where she allows her fears and doubts to plague her before she composes herself is required. If we're going to care about Sun we need to be let inside her head; her challenges and fears.

- The episode is filled with Hanso, Mittelwerk, Troupe, Degroots, Widmore, Paik. . . Ever get the feeling you're allowing the mythology to over-ride our key Lost characters?

- Ah, Mittelwerk is the economist!

- "I don't know what your beef is with Widmore"! That's not a line I could imagine DeVries saying!

- Sun tells Jack she doesn't hold him responsible, but we know that Jack believes she does (she shouldn't have let him off the hook!)

- Holmium!

OK, finished. So the reveal of Jin and the plot between Ben and Locke and Sun is all over the place, and I think the reveal that Jin is alive, and Locke is the man that turned up could have been more effective, but OK. You're a 'Jin is alive' guy. Fair enough!

Excellent ending. Very cold. I would lose Sun's extra last line about calling his contacts. Just have her deliver the command, and then a stunned Sayid carrying her order out with Sun saying no more and going to Ben. It's brutal that way, I think.

Otherwise it was a very plot-heavy episode, dense and pretty much all about a large-scale plan for the O6 and getting on the Island. For my tastes, I think it's a little too in-depth with plot machinations, a lot of talking about what happened and what is going to happen rather than just getting on and letting things happen. Because of that, I'd say it was your weakest one so far, but the ending is a cracker.

Scripts are about show rather than tell!

AH, you know what AC, I was totally going to cut the line about Sun and his contacts... but for some reason, I felt a NEED to put it in there to justify Sayid actually going in to kill Paik... but I sooo didn't want it.

I agree with you, and I've even put on several sites that this is my "Other Woman" but with much more plot detail... I was most excited about this episode and it turned into something I wasn't too pleased with. As for the plot heavyness... you're right. The thing is, I wanted to jump into things and to do so, I needed to incorporate some very hardcore backstory and the only way I could do that is dialogue with Hanso... I tried to keep it short and I guess I could have cut out the DeGroots line, but then I would have people telling me "Nu huh, the DeGroots got off the island too!" I try to cover my ass when it comes to the facts.

I think I showed Sun opening up at the grave scene when she is alone with Ji Yeon... that was the point of that scene... more so than Jin being alive.

Lastly, Gary Troupe was added for a reason. I introduced him in 5.2 with Cindy to open the door for him here and I close the door on him in 5.5. He was my ticket to the introduction of Christine DeVries and the reason she does what she does in 5.5.

I agree, the plot is all over the place, but hey... what's done is done and I hopefully make up for it in the coming episodes. I love your honesty AC... and for the most part, I agree with much of what you said.

Oh yeah, and Sun isn't so likable anymore. She is my favorite LOST character and this season I decided to make her cold... in fact, most of the characters are rather cold now (this is based on the flash forwards in S4) also, the island being somewhere cold is a somewhat reverse metaphor for the characters. If you haven't noticed, the on island people are becoming warmer people despite the island is in a freezing hell hole where as the off islanders are cold and unhappy. Sun will warm up though.

Haha, one more thing... I'm not getting defensive, but how could you say "What's your beef with Widmore" not being something Christine would say? We don't really get to know her until later on. She is a rather light hearted person with a very dark backstory.

JW - Heh! Just the term "beef" was my beef. It's a very American term. You don't get it in Europe at all. Jumped off the page for me, that was all.

(I would also, having read my above comment, that perhaps I was overly-criticial. I can't help it. I've read and commented on other scripts before this and also studied a bit about the 'art' of scriptwriting, so my critical head emerges when I review one. I'll try to temper some more positive next time!)

Hey, AC, I will take whatever you can dish, man! Haha, I like it because chances are I didn't state what I was trying to say or maybe you happened to overlook something so I want to clarify. Believe me, if you think it, then someone else probably does too. This is my first attempt at script writing, so if you know about it, please, critical is good.

I think, for the most part, your questions are answered in later episodes... I think reading a script and watching a show are two very different things and it is easier to get lost when reading.

As for "beef", Christine is American (I think I described her with an "American Accent" in 5.1 or 5.3, I forget).
