Re: Season 5
Hi Vincent,
Downunder we have two months of winter ahead of us, summer for us is 5 months away! I wish winter was nearly over, though saying that we had the winter solstice. In Melbourne, on the 21st of June, the Sun rose at 7.36am and set at 5.08am, giving us just nine hours and 32 minutes of daylight. But Vincent, six months from now, on December 21, we can expect to have daylight for roughly 14 hours and 47.25 minutes.
The reason we have solstices, and seasons, is because our planet is tilted at 23 degrees. In June, the southern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun and the northern hemisphere tilted towards the Sun; in December it's the reverse. In March and September, the hemispheres are not tilted at the Sun, but at right angles to it.
As a result of the tilt, in winter the Sun rises later and sets earlier, leading to less daylight. It also tracks a lower course through the sky, meaning its rays hit Australia at an oblique angle. These factors mean that winter is definitely colder than summer. Which makes sense when you consider it as, and you make have noticed, summer tends to be definitely warmer than winter.
So when Lost returns Downunder we will be approaching midsummer, which is the hottest part of summer, as opposed to midwinter which is strangely enough the coldest part of winter!
