The Origins of Smokies
I originally posted this idea on Lost-Theories.com but, I don't think I explained the point very well.
In the episode 'Cabin Fever' Locke is shown as a small boy of about
five in his living room playing backgammon. From what we can see he is
a quiet but intelligent boy who may have some outbursts of rage as we
see his mum tell him in a strange way to be on his best behaviour when
a certain Mr Alpert came. Which brings me to my theory.
When Richard comes in he straight away notices the a vivid picture on
the wall. It is of Smokey attacking someone in its trademark way.
Notice how he's immediatly drawn to it. I think this can only be
explained by one of two things.
It seems to me much more likely that the first is correct. As the
producers have ruled out time travel they would have to use mind travel
or something similar and I don't think the writters would like to have
to wriggle their way out of that one. Another reason that makes it seem more likely to me is that this is the kind of hint that they would drop in, in an episode. If Richard had time travelled then that picture means nothing at all. It just seems more likely to me.
Anyway that was just a little observation I picked up a while ago and I thought I'd get some feedback on it.

- That Smokey was around before the DHARMA and Richard recognised it from the island.
- Or that Richard time travelled back to that time from the present and thats how he recognised it.

I don't mean to sound angry, but the producers HAVE NOT ruled out time travel. In fact they've CONFIRMED it in an interview with E!:

*scroll down to the third bullet for synopsis or read the whole article
Also, I've seen Kristen from E! also talk about how the island moved in place and time (time travel) when the wheel was turned. I wish lost theories was still around so I could post a big fat I told you so.
But I like the rest of your theory. I never considered that the existance of little John's drawing was a clue as to smokey's timeline.

Yes Raven, I thought that maybe the writers had said something about it but I wasn't sure. But it still shows that either Richard can time travel or that Smokey existed before the DHARMA, both would be very interesting finds.
And Nino that really would send my theory down the plug hole.

THS it's got to be said, whether your theory is or isn't down the plug hole, you have a mind ahead of it's time, and I have to remind myself sometimes that you are still (nearly) a teenager.
I didn't know for a very long time as it happens, kudos to you son.

He says in his "hello" to everyone that there is someone called JJ and you could get on JJ's List. His/Her name is listed as LT_ADMIN
I read it quickly and thought the name was JJ. I never even put JJ and Abrams together!! Talk about slow on the uptake here!

Wow I should send you a boomerang HSM for your b/day.

PS
I think that the smoke monster definitely predates Dharma. I think all they have done is attempt to control it.

I tend to think it pre-dated Dharma also. I entered smoke and electro magnetism in a google search and it shows dust, smoke, tiny type particles, etc., as a way of jamming surveillance.
This is short explanatory sentence....
"ELECTROMAGNETIC OBSCURANT - Smoke, dust, mist, and other particular material deliberately generated to degrade the enemy's sensors and deny detailed information about the protected unit(s)."
Makes me wonder what's behind/in the Smoke Monster. Loved the way they used the word "Obscurant". Just a cool word! Instead of saying "I have to put on my make-up" I could say "I have to put on my face obsurant".

Well as I'm not really a believer in the supernatural, heres my take on it. Smokey starts out as some invisible force I don't know what, but hopefully its something not to hard to belive in. Then the DHARMA try to control this force and by tampering with it they manage to give it a physical appearance as a collum of black smoke.
Or something simmilar to that.
