Fourth of July

In honor of two very,different movies concerning the 4th of July
First as today is Tom Cruise' birthday. His film was made in 1989.
The movie won Oliver Stone an Oscar for Directing, although Tom was nominated for a Best Actor award ,he did not win.

Then there is George M. Cohan. In a movie made about his life starring James Cagney. As it turns out his birthday is actually July 3, 1878,and he died ironically the same year this classic musical was made the same year of his death 1942

This is a very good movie, they just do not make them like this anymore.James Cagney won the Best Actor/ Academy Award for his role 1942.

You know, a lot of people think the 4th of July is a celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but this is not the case. The final draft of the Declaration was approved by the Continental Congress on that day (the draft having been begun on the 2nd), but was not signed until the 2nd of August. Furthermore, I think it probably took you Brits even longer to recogni(s/z)e that we weren't part of the Empire anymore.

SomeArzt, I think you underestimate how quickly and willingly we disowned your lot!

Moved post back to my blog b/c of political frustration. Happy 4th of July. To those of you who aren't able to spend it celebrating b/c of your hate I suggest moveon.org. You will fit right in. So put on your Anti-Bush shirts and sit inside alone in the dark complaining.......just make sure your kids don't see any fireworks. They might get suspicious.

I wouldn't say we're hijacking the thread at all. I do honestly wish everyone here a happy and safe 4th of July, or Independence Day. Alas, not all of us will be celebrating with the genuine spirit of patriotism and community you seem to be. Honestly, as much as I have my own opinion, I do envy the community spirit you described in your post.

I respect your opinion as it is a really touchy issue. I am sorry I got so fiesty. I think I am the only Republican on this site & I try really hard to keep my foot in my mouth. Someone on here once said that there is no such thing as a "compassionate Republican" & it made me so sad & I disagree to no end, but I sit back b/c I can't fight all you smarties off alone. I'll be working most of the day tomorrow, but I'll be barbecuing, probably throwing back a few beers, and watching fireworks in the evening.

I think we have to realize that this is a diverse community here. Despite all of our differences, we're all brought together by our love of Lost and many other things, too. The world would be a better place if the lines that divide us were a bit more blurry elsewhere, too.

The last thing I want to see, though, is for you to feel ganged up on, or put down. Whether it be politically, in regard to LOST, or just in our humorous banter, I hope everyone feels valued and heard. You know you guys , I really did not intend to make a political announcement here. Thanks though blonde, for trying to defend my post.

I am sorry that it set off some strong feelings. It was just my way of saying have a nice holiday.I am sorry too, that this is the kind of thing that leads to hurt feelings.

It is not a holiday that is celebrated by the entire community,and I should have realized that.
In retrospect, I guess it wasn't such a good idea. Actually it is ironic that CagedFaraday is what gave me the idea, after seeing the avatar of his wishing everyone a Happy Independence day.
