Hurley's dad did it on purpose.
I'm thinking maybe Cheech there went and set those numbers on the camero's odometer so Hugo would see them, freak out, get sent to the looney bin, and be forced to reliquish control of his assets to his parents. Or even Back to his parents, now that he is no longer missing. His dad did try to weasel his hands on to Hugo's cash before.
Then again, i think back to when Hugo was arrested after driving his camero all crazy over the city, and wonder if maybe he was trying to make the numbers roll over and they just wouldn't. That could be either "number magic" or a busted odometer.

That`s a great explanation for Hurley speeding away like that I think you may be right. Now does mister nice dreams know about the numbers and there being Hurleys reason for craziness?

David was given the task of convincing Hurley he was not cursed by the numbers and shouldn't go to Australia. He took Hurley to a fortune teller, whom David had paid off to "get rid" of the curse. Despite his best efforts, David was unsuccessful in this task, and Hurley left for Australia. ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")

He knows Hugo has problems with the numbers and i really wouldn't doubt that if he is greedy enough for Hugo's money, he'll exploit any opportunity he can to get it. Hugo's been in an institutuin before and making him think his "curse" is back could snap him over the edge.

Well it couldnt have been a coincidence, there are ten digits in the numbers to have them all apear at one time is ridicuously unlikley. I believe that Hurley changed the numbers himself subconsciously. Maybe as part of him still wants to be on the island. Remember he did start in Lockes camp to begin with. We know that Hurley does have some strange abilties and things (moving Jacobs cabin ect).

Good point. All of the survivors' fathers are pretty horrible, so why should Hurley get a reunited happy ever after.
On the other hand, its Cheech! Hate to see him play a bad dad.
On a side note, I thought Hurley was speeding to get away from the vision of Charlie. But very cool point.
In the end, however, I think we will learn that those numbers will always be a part of Hurley. It is a good thought, but I don't think Cheech did it.

Re: Hurley's dad did it on purpose.
Actually, Hurley has given his money to his parents. He has stated he doesn't want it and then, in the flashforward at Hurley's party, his dad tells him he has got him a present. Hurley's immediate reaction is to say that he doesn't want anything that was bought with the money.
Therefore he doesn't want anything to do with the money and so has given it away. And it seems he has given at least some of it to his parents, his dad, who could have potentially bought him a present with it.

I don't think Hurley's dad did this.
I've always felt that the numbers are Hurley's responsibility...a part of his destiny if you will. At some point Hurley will need to use the numbers again, but for the right reasons this time: to get the O6 back to the island.

I agree with both AngeloComet and MollyCocktail. Hurley's dad would already have the money he wanted from him and wouldn't need to send Hurley to the institution. Those numbers mean something important and Hurley is the key to them.

AC is correct he has already given the money (at least a portion) to his parents. I did read though that the odometer is not the correct one for that car so there is still potential for his dad setting it up. Though without the motive of the money Im not sure what the reason would be.

No Cheech would not do that! haha. He would take a hand out, but not deliberately coerce his son.
I'm going along with the idea that Hurley is imagining the whole thing, or that the island is making him see things/go crazy.
