If the monster is so powerful then why does it only come out sometimes? and where is it when its not attacking people? how come ben knows so much about the monster?

That means that it's not so powerful after all. Plus, it enjoys collecting information, then threatening and manipulating people, and waiting for the results. Not always, but with people it's doubtful about. That is, when it's not summoned by someone for a specific mission.

I agree, where is the monster when we cant see it. Seemingly it wanders around scanning people and making judgements, (Locke, Eko the pilot.) We dont know how much control Ben has over the monster. It might be as minimal as just making it come to a specific area. We know its big and fast and it can throw people 50 feet in the air. But it neglects to stop the rest of the mercenaries.

My best guess would be that the monster is intelligent, perhaps a different form of Jacob, and it only intervenes when it absolutley has to. It knew that injuring one of the mercenaries would scare the others off. And when its not killing or scanning its watching.

Ive always imagined it hanging out underground in a kind of dormant state, waiting for either instruction, or to sense the presence of an unfamiliar human.

Maybe the monster needs to gather energy before it can attack so thats why you dont see the monster often

I was thinking that maybe, just maybe, that ash around Jacob's cabin was also the monster in, uh..."sleep mode"? And then it puffs up all those particles to make himself smokie and tear down trees, get people, etc etc lol...

I think that the ash is the leftover parts of its smokey form when it transforms into something else. Maybe when it transforms into the human form of Jacob??

Stich, I like your suggestion, it seems like it could be a possibility. Jacob has been absent this season, allowing mr shepard to speak for him. Also absent has been the ash ring of ash around the cabin. Maybe the two are interrelated?

Good point retro, the absence of the ash and the absence of the cabin is a mystery. Can the cabin be moved in a similar fashion to the island. Can the cabin be moved forward in time so that it disappears like the island disappears.

What the answer is will be one of the interesting aspects of the show to come ... or it could end up being a let down, some mysteries are better left as mysteries, whatever the answer will end up being it will never manage to please everyone.

Maybe some of the mysteries will be answered by Ben in words like "I do not know, John".

Maybe that is the best answer of all.

I don't think the writers are going to get away with not explaining the monster without dissapointing a lot of viewers. It has been one of the biggest mysteries since the very beginning.

Maybe when Cerberus (smoke monster) isn't attacking and scanning people, he's just like a dog. He rests, he runs around, he plays in one of his vents, etc.

I think that Cerberus is the sprititual guard dog of the island, and is supposed to keep it safe. Back in the day, he ran free and lived in harmony with the inhabitants. After Dharma came along, Cerberus became un-happy and was encountering more and more evil, selfish souls.

Cerberus has the ability to look into the soul of someone and judge them, depending on where they are, what they've done and if they are willing to work toward redemption.

The fact that the sonar fences were put up also helped to piss off Cerberus. I'm thinking that the cave under Ben's house that he went to in order to summon Cerberus used to be his place of slumber until Dharma took it away. All he had to do was go down there, perform a ritual, and open the sonar fences (assuming they were shut off after Alex brought Keamy and Co. through).

Perhaps he also absorbs some of that person, or an echo of them. After encountering so many dark souls, Cerberus became darker himself, more reclusive, and distrustful - sometimes even violent toward people.

Yeah, Vincent hasn't been around for a while has he? Maybe Vincent is the anti-smoke monster, the white smoke. Maybe a bit of a stretch, but Vincent is no doubt going to be an important part of the show in the future.
