Finale Satisfaction
I may be incurring the wrath of everybody here but hell i'm gonna say it.........
Was everybody totally satisfied with the finale??
One thing which keeps me hooked on Lost is the spectacular cliffhangers, most notably seen in the season finales. Season one saw the capture of Walt and the opening of the hatch, Season two saw the gang being captured by the others, and of course nobody can ever forget the end of season 3, which mindf**ked everybody for the 6/7 months the show was off the air.
After watching the finale yesterday i couldnt help but feel the slightest bit disappointed with how things unfolded. I mean yeah there are new questions posed e.g. Where the hell has the island been moved to? Why does Sun offer to help Widmore? Why once you move the Island can't you go back etc etc but i thought this episode tied up more loose ends than any other. We finally know who was in that damned coffin, we know that Des and Penny are reconciled and how it happens and we know how the mysterious Orchid station functions.
No matter how much TTLG left me reeling and desperately wanting to see Season 4, that is what makes this show so unique and so great. After watching the finale of this season I gained a hell of a lot of closure in doing so, and I forsee that I will cope with this break a lot better than I did last year.
From reading other people's comments on the finale I know the majority of members on the site loved it so I am expecting a lot of heat from this post but I really would appreciate to know how everybody else felt.

I agree with you Gary, I sorta felt the same way. Everything unfolded the way I expected it to in the finale, and I believe that is thanks to all the flashforwards in season 4. You kinda know where everything was headed. Still can't wait for season 5 =)

Re: Finale Satisfaction
I kind of see what you are saying Gary... but I think maybe the writers may have tied up a lot more loose ends, because of the shortened season.
I'm sure they knew that it caused some collateral damage, so IMO , I think they were trying to get as much as they could into this season finale. That is probably why they asked for the extra hour. Besides, we also now know there will only be two more seasons before they end it.
They have said that when they started Lost there was always a beginning,a middle and an end.So with six seasons, and four down, this is like they said "TheBeginning of the End"

Re: Finale Satisfaction
I also agree. The bar was set very high for this finale. If TTLG had been the 1st finale then you'd have been dissapointed for three seasons straight. It was a good cliffhanger, they'll never top the flashforward as I expect series 5 to be weaker and the very last episode will have no cliffhanger (hopefully). The coffin was expected. The flash forward was out of the blue. But I still have a lot of specualtion about it.
A very good episode for lost standards, An amazing episode for normal tv standards. Just remember, dont take lost for granted. You may be left with the ultimate unsatisfaction if lost ends and you havent prepared yourself.

Yeah I agree too. Definitely wasn't the best finale we've seen. It was more "informational" to tell us what exactly happened to get them off the island, etc.
I still really enjoyed it, but I agree with you

Re: Finale Satisfaction
For those that have been dying to know about the coffin, it was a nice ending. Personally, and I'm not just saying this to sound cool, 'who was in the coffin?' never interested me. Just one of those mysteries that totally left me cold.
Now I know. And that was the ending? Pah. I thought there was going to be a final minute or so where we would see where the Island had ended up - a reveal that would just totally blow us away and make us wonder How on Earth has that happened?
But that ending didn't come. So yeah, I agree, it did feel slightly deflating. On the plus side, I thought the actual episode in turns of action and excitement and tension was the best finales yet.

If I could use one word to describe what was wrong with the Season 4 finale, it would be "Smug".
Smug, as in "yes we'll let them off the Island but they'll be miserable and yearn to come back for yet another season of employed actors and writers". Smug.
Smug, as in, "So what if a lot of innocent people die on the freighter? I got my revenge." Smug.
Smug, as in, "May I eat these peanuts? (after having eaten most of them already". Smug.
Smug, as in "I hope this makes you happy, Jacob". Smug.
Smug as in, "If you mean time-traveling bunnies, then yes." Smug.
Smug, as in Keamy spitting out blood and broken teeth and bragging about how his bullet proof vest has saved his life several times already, just before he's knifed to death. With his own knife. Smug.
Smug, as in code-naming the walk-in freezer scene "Frozen Donkey Wheel", and then denying in a podcast that the name has anything to do with the action. And smug, as in thinking that anyone would be impressed with a papier-mache wheel that looks like it's going to break in half if a fly lands on it. Smug.
Smug, as in having us believe that the native people of Membata aren't smart enough to figure out that the losties didn't spend months at sea in a life raft, or to tell their rescuers that the losties just arrived at their beach the other day.

Re: Finale Satisfaction
I wasn't impressed. Not like I was with TTLG. There was almost too much going on and it had a rushed feel to it.
My biggest problem is what happened to Keamy and his team and I'm considering posting a rant about their demise. It may go something like this...
So the mighty freight train that is Smokey can only manage to severely wound one of Keamy's team while the Others make easy work of them (what stopped them from doing that to begin with?). All of them except for Keamy...
Keamy runs after Kate and Ben, gets ambushed by Sayid, beat up, shot in the back by Richard and left for dead. LEFT for DEAD when his body armor is clearly visible. LEFT for DEAD when his pulse should have been checked.
After conveniently being left for dead, he manages to make his way back to the Orchid in record time despite being wounded and finds the elevator that Locke couldn't find. Then Ben does what Sayid the neck breaker couldn't do by using his magic wand (telescoping baton) to subdue Keamy and fatally wound him.
Aside from "what happened to the island?", the questions that were asked in this episode seemed like an afterthought and involved characters we really don't care about. I don't particularly care about what Miles is hinting at with Charlotte or why he wants to stay.
Don't get me wrong. I still enjoyed it and still love LOST, but this finale was flat Dharma beer compared to previous champagne others.

Re: Finale Satisfaction
Smug, I have to agree with that one.
But overall, I enjoyed the finale. Not the best one I've ever seen but still filled with emotional moments and "holy shit" moments as well.
Best moments:
The Des and Penny reunion...come on, that was so great.
Sawyer's impression of superman wearing kryptonite boxers (can't fly)
Island goes bye bye
Ben crying as he turns the wheel
Worst moment:
paper mache' wheel ?!?!?!?!?!
Locke in the coffin (cuz I was wrong )
Not too bad, but how do you beat the flash-forward reveal from last season?

Re: Finale Satisfaction
The second Alpert showed up in the scene, I was like 'put one in his head'. But they didn't. A lot of things are getting like that... we have to accept holes like that, so they can set up the story, which I feel more and more relies too heavily on "and so-and-so shows up in the nick of time".shamballa wrote:Keamy runs after Kate and Ben, gets ambushed by Sayid, beat up, shot in the back by Richard and left for dead. What if kate was a bit slower getting to the chopper...
What if Sayid couldn't fight the epic They Live street fight with Keamy...
What if ben hadn't escaped Keamy... would Locke have even found the damn elevator switch?
Too much in this episode relied on perfect dramitic timing... and as a crutch. I think they really need to look at how they set up tension as writers, and try something a bit different next season.

Totally agree CF. BTW, I liked South Park's version of the "They Live" street fight better than LOST's.

Yeah... that was one of the great acheivements in cartoon history. That was shot for shot. But I still couldn't help but think of it when Keamy faught Sayid. I was like, Geeze, can't one of them just win already?!?shamballa wrote:BTW, I liked South Park's version of the "They Live" street fight better than LOST's.

I liked it cause it had me on my toes. But then again, they gave us everything we expected - but hey, dont we complain when too many holes are left? Oh wait thats the part we love! hahaha.
Least favorite part:
Charlotte "what do you mean get back here?"
Miles: "what do i mean?"
ugghhhh.... its like they were trying TOO hard to be mysterious. Its like - yes we are trying to be mysterious, and we are making it obvious.

Re: Finale Satisfaction
I much enjoyed the Sayid-Keamy fight in the original broadcast in HD.
(I recorded the episode on a DVD recorder, set to LP. Should have set it to SP. Lost a lot of detail, with too much pixelation during the fast action. Of course it's not an HD recorder but it stil could have been better.)
The Sawyer-Kate kiss? Kind of a letdown. Much steamier was their almost-night togther in the Barracks (NewOtherton) a few episodes back. That was the one where Kate stalked off when Sawyer expressed relief that she wasn't pregnant.
The Penny-Desmond kiss was nice, but I couldn't help but think there's more heartbreak coming for those two, especially since
Penny is on Ben's hit list.
Maybe Ben gets close enough to shoot and Desmond kills Ben in the series finale.

In a word, Smug. I agree completely with this comment and with the premise of the theory. The bar was just set to high. I also think that it's time "Darlton" quit f'ing with us. I don't really care what happens on the show, because it's theirs and they have the right to do whatever. What I do absolutely take issue with is a blatant lie, like the one told about the "Frozen Donkey Wheel". That sucks and should have a lot of people pissed off. Other than that it was a pretty decent episode of a show that probably needs to be wrapped up pretty soon or really risk "jumping the shark."
