Optical Illusion & reality
If optical illusions tell me that my neurological & optical perception of reality are at best, incomplete, then how can hallucinations (visual or auditory) be defined as something unreal because they are based on no stimuli?
But the stimuli which make me perceive optical illusions define my reality by representing an UNREAL reality, yet that stimuli is defined as being real.
What is cooking there then !?!!?!?!

Re: Optical Illusion & reality
Humans define reality 80% through visual stimulation. The human brain actually paralizes the body while in rem sleep so that we don`t physically act out are dreams. What is real? What ever you percive to be true. It has been therorized that we see only a small portion of reality around us, ie. micrwaves can`t see them but they exist. Ok I didn`t answer anything but who can???

Re: Optical Illusion & reality
In an English Composition course I took, we were asked to write an essay on an event in our lives that affected us in some way. I proceeded to write about an extremely vivid dream that had me confused for weeks, but I wrote it from the vantage point of it actually happening. My point was that, as I perceived at the time, that dream was reality, in that I was unaware of it not being so. Since I perceived it as happening to me, it was in fact happening to me, as reality is simply that which we see to be real.

SBP, I WAS born colour-blind!!! and I didn't find out until I was 11 when I took the Ishihara colour dot test, So your point is bang on!
I had had signs, in 1978 Bruce Miller asked me why the picture in my sky was purple.....if Only LOST had been around then, I could have given him a good answer! LOL
instead I got defensive and told him that the snot-scabs round his face were horrible and that his plimsolls were plastic (cmon! thats what 8 year olds do!)
Red/green colour blind, so I can never be a train driver or a pilot DAMN!
Nino I don't think LOST is an illusion, I think they all really are on that island. Sorry......Were!

Someatz I know what you mean about the vivid dreams. I have had some dreams that I would swear were real it was only upon waking that I realized it was a dream. I even find my self from time to time having to tell my self that something I might be remembering was actually from a dream that’s how real they seam they create memories!! I would have defiantly given you and “A”

ok slight misunderstanding, my question was more generally put, than in specific relation to LOST, but I guess any conversations about the nature of reality, will by definition become a bit skewed!

Hi Sham
That optical illusion is incorporated in a building about 5 minutes walk from my apartment. I see it everyday, and everyday it makes me laugh.

How cool is that!? I love architecture that doesn't take itself too seriously; very whimsical.

Alpert
I really enjoyed those posts.
This sounds stupid but I favor a perception based line of reasoning for why Alpert doesnt age.
We dont see alpert age because whatever he is, he is so attached to some type of core desire, that we are all looking at him, each in our own perception, that we never take our eyes off of him and what he is attached to. Because we (you and I) through our desire never take our eyes off of him, we never see change, thus he never appears to age.
Silly, no?

I don't desire Alpert in any way!
I desire Kate in a chocolate chastity belt and Juliette in Cindy's uniform and Sun eating a flake like on the advert!
