The Money
I am trying to get a grip on the amount of $ involved in the O6 settlements, mainly because I assume the amount Sun needed, to buy a controlling share in Paik Industries was flippin huge.
I have always assumed Paik Industries & Widmore Industries are comparative in size & wealth, based on no evidence of course, just that they were both magnates who were extremely rich.
So would that mean, if someone wanted, they could buy a controlling share of Widmore Industries too? Or is it that Widmore Industries is the larger magnate by far?
I am not exactly au-fait with how it all works, but I assume it was Oceanic's Insurers who have had to pay up the moolah? If they have had to pay such massive amounts to six people, could the insurance company afford that? Again, Sun buying the controlling share must mean they got their money immediately, not staggered over x amount of years or anything.
Has it been specualted anywhere on just how much money they got? I can't find anything.
Is it feasible that all their money came indirectly from Widmore? Because he has the largest motive to hush them. It would be ironic it it turned out true, because it would mean he paid Sun, paving the way for her to get her father's company, to later accost him in the street, where he is left in no doubt that she means business.
How much do you reckon they got then? and who do you think footed the bill?

Good point SC and unless Sun has assistance (Hurleys lottery money, the rest of the six) we have to assume that the insurance company is capable of paying out 6 times the value of a controlling share in Paik Industries, plus paying the families of the dead that seems enormous.
Does Sun get more because she was on the flight, her husband died because of the flight and her baby has to grow up without a farther because of the flight?

I interpreted it, from the quote "they used 5 different bank accounts", that all of the O6 (except Aaron) pooled their money so Sun could buy control of Paik, Inc.

CF I thought that initially but the O6 seem so split I cant see them pooling their cash. Consider the coversation between Ben and Jack at the end of the season, if they are close enough to pool money to bring Paik down then would it be so difficult for Jack to believe he could bring them back together?

Hmm... then if that's the case...Lojozz wrote:CF I thought that initially but the O6 seem so split I cant see them pooling their cash. It is possible being both a survivor (hush money payout), and the surviving spouce of Jin (Oceanic's insurance + his own life insurance) she had enough herself.

Hmmm.....can't decide now whether the 5 accounts are pooled or not.....Will have to check how far-forward it was when Sun saw Widmore, at least 18 months to 2 years ? (based on the child saying mama) and think about whether circumstances could have changed for the O6.
Interesting point about Sun possibly getting a bigger payout too from both of you a) being up the duff and 2 mouths 2 feed and b)potential Jin life savings money.
I like it.

Thats the only way I can add it up, but do insurance payouts get that big? I guess they must. Multi-nationals must have insurane, right? Man, am I in the wrong business?

I just noticed the avatar! I am jealous. I don't know why but I find the debate club intimidating. Whenever I go on it to reply, my brain freezes and I can't think of an informed answer.
The crown in the Dharma Logo, makes me wonder, do you think Her majesty watches Lost?

Well, I'm sure as an employee of Paik, Inc. he gets something. Since he's an enforcer by trade, I'm sure he took an extra policy or two. Death by airplane crash usually pays out double or triple. Not to mention Oceanic's policy. And if Widmore is paying to keep the O6 quiet, I'm sure that payola is nothing to sneeze at. Oh, and Sun had slid away some cash to live on when she was running away from Jin. Yeah, I think Sun might have the means.

SC you really surprise me, you are without doubt a scalp i'd love to take in the debate club, I think that would be a battle worth a crown.
But thank you for bringing this up, if you feel like that, then many others must. Can I suggest a comment along the lines of 'so far i agree with X, but I could be swayed by Y". This will show your support for the enterprise whilst giving an indication that one side needs to do more work. Its meant to be fun not exclusive and if one of our most reasoned members finds it hard to comment then we must have it wrong.
I rather suspect her madj watches it with a corgi on her knee.

LOL! I bet her Madj has jumped up in jaw-dropping shock a few times whilst watching, and displaced the corgi in space(time) haha, cracking me up thinking about it!
and the poor corgi only put up with Lost bcoz of it's version of Sawyer i.e. Vincent , was in it.
Do you think we will see Vincent in an advert running through a spraying hosepipe in the garden in slow-mo, and then heartily munching his dinner?
My scalp tends not to be collected, as I try not to put it up on offer LOL! I would never forgive myself, should circumstance not favour me, and one of my worst fears is being humilated and beaten in a public arena! My destiny does not lie on that path!
I'll take the sublime over the glory, but that doesn't mean I don't secretly crave the glory! PLUS....there is always someone who wants to challenge you when you are the Crown-wearer!
The only crown I frequent is The Crown pub in South London, I don't make waves there either mainly coz it's akin to Mos Eisley! But they do a wonderful shepherd's pie, which goes down well with a pint.
But I will consider making an input in future along the lines you suggest. It's just that, you already know, before you even open up debate club, that it's not a lightweight fight, and if you really wanna join in, you got to have big boxing gloves!
Ok enough of the metaphors but they are such useful tools for illuminating the mind what!

Lojozz, yes the Multi-nationals have insurance but a lot of them are self-insured meaning they do not have a set policy limit it is more of a reserve fund to pay out any claims brought against them and like most companies Oceanic probably paid them a hefty sum to keep them from trash talking the company.
And don't worry I am in the insurance business and unless you own the company it is not that much money.

I was thinking, who do we see spending the settlement money? Jack, he started his own private practice in LA, which I’m sure means the cost is in the millions. He is the only one we see using the Gold Pass that Oceanic gave him.(Sayid would draw attention, Hurley has his own money, Kate isn’t going anywhere, and Sun I doubt would ever get on an Oceanic plane again ever.)
Kate does have that nice house in LA, and who can blame her. I’d spend as much as I could to give my kid the best I can afford.
But I can see a loophole there. Maybe Kate didn’t get settlement money because she was a wanted fugitive in US Marshall custody and never willfully purchased a ticket on that Oceanic flight, and the money she does have, comes from Aaron’s trust settlement with her as executor guardian. (yeah, that’s a big stretch)
Anywhos…. I’ll say 3.2 million dollars per person.

I'm going to roll the dice here and say that Sun is working with Ben and it is he who helped her acquire a controlling share in Paik Industries.

I can buy that. Ben's closet contained large numbers of foreign note in large demoninations. Plus, he didn't really blink when Miles asked him for $3.25M... although he did make a snarky comment.MollyCocktail wrote:I'm going to roll the dice here and say that Sun is working with Ben and it is he who helped her acquire a controlling share in Paik Industries.
