Lost's Most Shocking
Ok, I am pretty bored during this break. So, I decided to make my own Top Ten list. This list is what I think were the 10 most shocking moments in the show's history. Let me know if you agree or disagree, or you can make your own list. This might be a good way to pass the time during the offseason. Maybe we can make other top ten lists, like Most Romantic, Funniest, Heartbreaking, or even top ten biggest unanswered mysteries. Well, anyway, here is my list. Enjoy.
10.) 16 Year Old Recording: How can you have a Lost top ten list without something from the Pilot episode? When Charlie uttered “Where are we?” after hearing Danielle’s 16 year old recording it set the tone for the entire series.
9.) Locke is in the Coffin: Although it was predicted by some (Ahem), the reveal of Locke in the coffin answered the biggest unanswered question in the show’s history. And it also showed that one of the primary characters, as well as one of the fan’s favorite characters, will die.
8.) Friendly Fisherman take Walt: This scene went from all smiles and celebrating and laughter to “WAAAAAAAAALT!” Just as it looked like they were about to be rescued, the Others show up, blow up the raft, and take Walt.
7.) Jin is not one of the O6: While this does not necessarily mean he is dead, it was still shocking nonetheless. The way the Ji Yeon episode was set up, along with all the supposedly leaked spoiler information about him being one of the O6, made this for a memorable moment, not to mention quite humbling as well. It made all the popular “Aaron can’t be one of the O6 because he wasn’t even on the flight manifest” talk really seem silly afterwards. It made us realize that we don’t know it all, and even we die-hard fans can still be tricked once in a while. We don’t have it all figured out.
6.) The Electromagnetic Anomaly detected from the Listening Station: Some of the more popular theories during the first two season of Lost involved purgatory, limbo, or it all being just a dream. These theories were all squashed when the Island was revealed to the Listening Station during “Live Together, Die Alone” when the sky turned purple.
5.) The New Otherton Book Club: The beginning of “A Tale of Two Cities” went from a normal town book club meeting to the realization that the Others are civilized people as opposed to bearded, raggedy islanders.
4.) Anthony Cooper is Mr. Sawyer: To me, the most shocking part of Sawyer realizing that Anthony Cooper was the murderer of his parents was not the fact that he and Locke were so interconnected because of it. The most shocking part was the fact that the note he read to Cooper before killing him was introduced within the first few episodes of the show. It showed signs of a “long term plan” by the writers. In a rather dull Season 3 to that point, this scene renewed our faith in the show and made all of us say, “Maybe they do know where they are going with all of this…”
3.) “Don’t tell me what I can’t do!”: Teenage Locke can say it. Jack can say it. Even Island Locke can say it as many times as he wants. But every time someone says that, I think back of when it was first revealed that Locke was in a wheelchair prior to the island. Locke screaming “Don’t tell me what I can’t do” made us realize not only how special a place the island is, but also how special a person Locke is.
2.) Someone is in the Hatch: The entire episode of “Man of Science, Man of Faith” was full of so many spine-tingling moments that I couldn’t pick just one. It began with what appeared to be an ordinary man waking up, eating breakfast, washing dishes, and working out. The only thing was this ordinary man was in the Hatch, answering the show’s biggest question at that point. Then came when Jack went into the Hatch and we saw what it looked like down there. All the lights and the apparent technology, along with “Make your own kind of Music” playing made sure we were on the edge of our seats. Then to find out that that person in the Hatch was Desmond, someone who Jack previously met, really capped off a “WOW” episode.
1.) We have to go back!!: This was the jawdropper of all jawdroppers. The final 5 minutes of Through the Looking Glass caused the entire Lost fan base to scream a collective “It’s a FlashFORWARD!!” This moment answered the biggest question of all: Do they get off? But, at the same time it opened up so many questions for Season 4 to answer. Who else gets off? How do they get off? And why do they have to go back? I don’t think it is possible for any of us to become any more hooked on the show than how hooked we were at that point.
10.) 16 Year Old Recording: How can you have a Lost top ten list without something from the Pilot episode? When Charlie uttered “Where are we?” after hearing Danielle’s 16 year old recording it set the tone for the entire series.

OMG, this is so how we're gonna pass the time.
My fav moment of all time was episode four. Dont tell me what I can't do! But Mr Roc28 I'm surprised that Eko meets the monster/ season one finale monster wasn't in. Nor was Jacob, and I think The WAAAAAAAAAALT scene should have been higher. But OMG this is the best idea ever

very cool.
I would even have added the end of "The Economist" when we see that Ben is off the island and now Sayid is working for him.

THS, yeah the smoke monster first being totally revealed face to face with Eko was kind of shocking. But, I don't know if Jacob was very shocking. Maybe eerie, but not shocking in my eyes at least.
Yes the end of The Economist was shocking too. Maybe I could have fit that in there. I'm not sure where though.

Re: Lost's Most Shocking
Mine would go like this
10 ) We see the others book club - This was a great moment, this was the
first time we ever see the real others. No tricks, no fake beards, just
pure Others. A great way to start season three! Also this moment is
special as I thought I could never watch lost anymore, then my genius
brother downloads it. Woo!
9 ) Locke in the coffin - Not a huge surprise as we knew it was going to be
someone like him. But still it was the biggest unanswered question ever!
8 ) First time we hear the smoke monster/ French woman - These two events
created the best pilot episode ever! There's a crazy smoke monster in
the jungle and a French woman has been on here for 16 years! What could
be better than that.
7 ) Bernard, Jin and Sayid 'shot' - When Jack was about to beat the crap
out of Ben and then he pulls out this trick, and then instead of Jack
giving in like we all expected. We get to see Jack beat the living hell
out Ben. Most satisfying moment ever!
6 ) WAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLT - The first season finale, we didn't know what
to expect. We were rewarded with a brilliant finale with a
'Kill-yourself-its-so-frustrating' moment with the hatch. And a What!
Moment with the raft. What a great scene. They don't want Aaron they
want Walt. It was all going so well....
5 ) First time we see The Smoke Monster - In the finale we saw Smokey in
collums of smoke. But in season two, we see the full smoke monster. We
see his size, his power, his smokeness. Purley Amazing.
4 ) Sun can speak English - This was my first real OMG moment. The pilot
was two early for us to appreciate any mysteries. But Wow, Micheal I need your help. This was a memorable moment for me. A deserved number four.
3 ) Des/Compuer in the hatch - Okay, so all summer we argued about what
was in the hatch. But who could have guessed that there was a crazy
Scottish man and a computer that saves the world. Come on, who. The
opening scene of season two was the best. It had me my mum and brother
going. Locke... no Sawyer.... Jack?? Desmond turned out to be a great
addition to the cast and gave us one of the most emotional scenes ever.
2 ) Dont tell me what I can't do! - As you may know my favourite
character is Locke. This was the ultimate scene for him, not as
shocking but just great. Still gives me shivers down my spine to hear
it. In fact any Locke shouting phrase can go here.
1 ) Flashforward! - This one speaks for itself. The most genius, theory
provoking, exciting, mind bogolling concept you will ever hear of ever
again. Nothing can top this. Nothing.

I agree, THS, the Flashforward reveal has to be the real stunner of the bunch.
Amongst all the other suggestions here, I would add that the whole scene where Michael shot Ana Lucia, Libby, and then himself at the end of Two For The Road was an absolutely smack to the head.

Finding out Rose had Cancer as Bernard was proposing marriage!
Finding out that the Sawyer flashback was not accurate, Sawyer was the little boy, so do we assume that the younger Anthony Cooper was identical looking to Sawyer?
Anthony Cooper turning up after his funeral/ and Locke's bag NOT containing the money!
Burying alive Nikki and Paulo
Libby being shot and killed
Ben showing the Red Sox video to Jack
Sawyer being concerned about Hurley
Hurley losing his best mate by winning the lottery
Rousseau's inability to fix the music box but at the same time possessing the technical skills to make really great traps and explosives
Hurley's lack of happiness in seeing Walt at Santa Rosa

I don't know. For me, when Michael shot Ana-Lucia and Libby was like OMG, didn't see that coming at all!!
Alex getting shot was shocking and sad and still has me reeling.
New Otherton, wow!!
The flash forward was awesome
Ben saying "youre mine", that was creepy and a great scene.
when the light went on in the hatch and when the bearded others snatched Walt, that was crazy. Never had a finale made me count the days until it started back up like that!!
These may not be in order but they all had me going "whaaaa....????" which is awesome to me that a television show can do that.

Probably the most shocking to me was the opening scene in Catch 22.
I really believed this was what had just happened, until they showed it was just a vision that Desmond had.

Re: Lost's Most Shocking
Good posting Iroc.
I had the luck of finding Lost when it was in it's third season. I say luck becasue I was able to sit down and watch Lost seasons 1 & 2 without having to wait. It sorta had me hooked right from the start with the pilot episode but I knew I was in trouble when I saw "Walkabout."
I spent a long time picking my jaw up off the floor when I found out Locke was in a wheelchair before coming to the island.
The Flash-forward reveal with scruffy Jack and "we have to move the island" both had impact, but "Walkabout" really got to me.

Here are my favourite "Most Shocking":
10) Otherville
9) "Not Penny's Boat"
Room 23
7) Rousseau's distress signal
6) The "magic box" that Anthony Cooper was held in.
5) Patchy appearing on the Pearl Station moniter
4) Ben "releasing" Smokey
3) "We have to go back"
2) Finding out Locke was in a wheelchair
1) Finding out that The Black Rock was not a rock but a ship.

For me the most shocking moment of the season was in Eggtown when Claire & Kate were sitting on the front porch & Sawyer came by for a cup of coffee. I thought my husband changed the channel. How did we get from the pilot to Eggtown? If someone would have told me when I watched 815 go down in the pilot that soon Claire would be sitting on her porch w/roomate Kate holding born baby Aaron, offering coffee to Sawyer....well that was my most shocking moment. I wasn't shocked at what happened, I was shocked at how this evolution of my Losties becoming the others had transpired right before my very eyes & I never really got it until then.

I don't know if here is the proper place to dissent, but I just can't deal when people take the "magic box" line even close to literally. Molly references it here, but I know there are a number of other references to it strewn about the site. I just can't fathom it, and I don't believe Ben can be taken as anything other than having been patronizing Locke when he said it. Ben, Richard, and Tom all move freely between the island than the rest of the world. Why would they need a "magic box". It's just a euphemism for "I kidnapped him".MollyCocktail wrote:6) The "magic box" that Anthony Cooper was held in.
