The World will end September 21,2012!!!
The world will end September 21, 2012!!!
There are prophecies from all over the world and all through time that predict the end is near. From the priestesses of Apollo to the ancient book of I Ching to the collective conciseness of the internet via the Webbot. But it is the precise date and craftsmanship of the Mayans that make their prediction so scary. The Mayans set a date for the end of the world and it is during the winter solstice, September 21, 2012 when great changes on our planet could take place. Astronomers agree that on this date in our near future not only will Earth be in perfect alignment with the Sun but the Sun and Earth will also be in perfect alignment with the center of The Milky Way Galaxy. Besides this happing very rarely and not knowing what could happen to the planet there is another factor. Scientists have found in the last five or six years what the Mayans discovered thousands of years ago , a black hole in the center of The Milky Way Galaxy.
No one knows what will happen once the three align.
The speculation most popular by modern scientists is that the equator will once again shift. If this happens slowly over years earthquakes and bad weather alike will devastate the planet. If it happens quickly over weeks or days, whole civilizations and species will cease to exist. Now we all read everything we see into our favorite show and I was watching The History Channel last night but still what does this have to do with Lost. You mean besides the end of the world being prophesized? How about Sayid`s use of the compass and his comments on magnetic North seeming to move. You see not only do scientists believe the Equator can move from this cosmic event but also the reversal of magnetic North and South poles.
There has been a lot on the island that looks to be of ancient civilizations. This struck me as I thought about the similarities of these ancient profits, from Greek to medieval Mayans, 5000 year old Asia, Hopi Indians, mythical Merlin to The Bible. Even today people use the internet via The Webbot.
I also found it interesting that from the Apollo priestesses to the European profit Mother Shipton a common thread to there prophesizing was that they either lived in caves or meditated for sake of visions within special caves.
I’m sure many will see this as “reaching” but we all know that Lost has a little bit of everything in it, history, mathematics, literature, religion and science so why not a little prophecy?
One last thought about the Mayan calendar is simply its look, A darma like logo or perhaps a likeness to the frozen donkey wheel?
Ok I may be stretching a wee bit but this kept me up all night so sorry about the rant. Please be nice it is my birthday.
Happy birthday SAOY!
Everyone prepare for a polar shift in a few years!
( I wrote this in word with the pictures inserted but it will not post for some reason so my apologizes for grouping the pictures in a second post).

Re: The World will end September 21,2012!!!
Sorry Vinnie but I'm gonna have to point out a few things. Not wrong with your theory but the prediction.
How would the Mayans figure out that theres a black hole in the centre of the galaxy. They didn't have telescopes or anything scientific besides looking at the stars. They are extremely hard to detect and the only way of finding them is to look where light bends.
There may well be a black hole in the centre of the milkyway but we shouldn't have to worry about that for a while. From Wikipedia - Earth, along with the Solar System, is situated in the Milky Way galaxy, orbiting about 28,000 light years from the center of the galaxy, and about 20 light years above the galaxy's equatorial plane in the Orion spiral arm.
What would happen if the sun, the earth and the centre of the galaxy would align? What? It means that they're in a line. I don't see how this could effect us.
Sorry Vinnie your part about the connection between the losties and ancient civilisations is perfectly plausable, but I hate doomsday theories unless they involve global warming or something scientifically proven.

In Vinny's defense, the Mayan calendar is considered by most to be mathematically perfect...only 1 mistake in 6000 years! Amazing....
The calendar baffles scientists and philsophers alike.
Seeing as how Darlton loves to play with real science and philosophy, I see no reason to think that that they wouldn't give a nod to one of the greatest civilizations that ever lived. As to how they could see a black hole without formal astronomy equipment, it is well documented that the Mayans used astronomy in every aspect of their daily lives and literally spent hundreds of years observing the skies.
Nice work Vin.
and Happy Birthday!

Excuse the ignorance but if the Mayans have a completely different callendar to ours where would the year "2012" come into the equation as it is only based on the supposed birth of Jesus of nazareth and not at all in the Mayan calendar ...They don't even have the years split into 365 days like we do ..They don't have months based on the Roman calendar so September does'nt exist and the 21st day in September Come on give me a break..Don't mean to sound rude ..Apologies in advance....but where do you get this information from ...There may however be a polar shift in the future but it would be impossible to calculate ......Cheers John

Hi Vinnie, Great post, and very nice research. While we know that the producers make numerous connections in many different ways to "Lost", I have an inkling that this may NOT be one of them, though. That is NOT to say, that certain aspects of your theory couldn't come into play!

This might help John:
The Maya Calendar
Among their other accomplishments, the ancient Mayas invented a
calendar of remarkable accuracy and complexity. The Maya calendar was
adopted by the other Mesoamerican nations, such as the Aztecs and the
Toltec, which adopted the mechanics of the calendar unaltered but
changed the names of the days of the week and the months.
The Maya calendar uses three different dating systems in parallel, the
Long Count, the Tzolkin (divine calendar), and the Haab (civil
calendar). Of these, only the Haab has a direct relationship to the
length of the year.
A typical Mayan date looks like this: 12.18.16.2.6, 3 Cimi 4 Zotz.
12.18.16.2.6 is the Long Count date.
3 Cimi is the Tzolkin date.
4 Zotz is the Haab date.
What is the Long Count?
The Long Count is really a mixed base-20/base-18 representation of a
number, representing the number of days since the start of the Mayan
era. It is thus akin to the Julian Day Number (see section 2.16).
The basic unit is the kin (day), which is the last component of the
Long Count. Going from right to left the remaining components are:
uinal | (1 uinal = 20 kin = 20 days) |
tun | (1 tun = 18 uinal = 360 days = approx. 1 year) |
katun | (1 katun = 20 tun = 7,200 days = approx. 20 years) |
baktun | (1 baktun = 20 katun = 144,000 days = approx. 394 years) |
The kin, tun, and katun are numbered from 0 to 19.
The uinal are numbered from 0 to 17.
The baktun are numbered from 1 to 13.
Although they are not part of the Long Count, the Mayas had names for
larger time spans. The following names are sometimes quoted, although
they are not ancient Maya terms:
1 pictun = 20 baktun = 2,880,000 days = approx. 7885 years
1 calabtun = 20 pictun = 57,600,000 days = approx. 158,000 years
1 kinchiltun = 20 calabtun = 1,152,000,000 days = approx. 3 million years
1 alautun = 20 kinchiltun = 23,040,000,000 days = approx. 63 million years
When did the Long Count start?
Logically, the first date in the Long Count should be 0.0.0.0.0, but
as the baktun (the first component) are numbered from 1 to 13 rather
than 0 to 12, this first date is actually written 13.0.0.0.0.
The authorities disagree on what 13.0.0.0.0 corresponds to in our
calendar. I have come across three possible equivalences:
13.0.0.0.0 = 8 Sep 3114 BC (Julian) = 13 Aug 3114 BC (Gregorian)
13.0.0.0.0 = 6 Sep 3114 BC (Julian) = 11 Aug 3114 BC (Gregorian)
13.0.0.0.0 = 11 Nov 3374 BC (Julian) = 15 Oct 3374 BC (Gregorian)
Assuming one of the first two equivalences, the Long Count will again
reach 13.0.0.0.0 on 21 or 23 December AD 2012 - a not too distant future.
The date 13.0.0.0.0 may have been the Mayas' idea of the date of the
creation of the world.
What is the Tzolkin?
The Tzolkin date is a combination of two ``week'' lengths.
While our calendar uses a single week of seven days, the Mayan
calendar used two different lengths of week:
- a numbered week of 13 days, in which the days were numbered from
1 to 13 - a named week of 20 days, in which the names of the days were:
0. | Ahau | 5. | Chicchan | 10. | Oc | 15. | Men
1. | Imix | 6. | Cimi | 11. | Chuen | 16. | Cib
2. | Ik | 7. | Manik | 12. | Eb | 17. | Caban
3. | Akbal | 8. | Lamat | 13. | Ben | 18. | Etznab
4. | Kan | 9. | Muluc | 14. | Ix | 19. | Caunac |
As the named week is 20 days and the smallest Long Count digit is 20
days, there is synchrony between the two; if, for example, the last
digit of today's Long Count is 0, today must be Ahau; if it is 6, it
must be Cimi. Since the numbered and the named week were both
``weeks'', each of their name/number change daily; therefore, the day
after 3 Cimi is not 4 Cimi, but 4 Manik, and the day after that,
5 Lamat. The next time Cimi rolls around, 20 days later, it will be
10 Cimi instead of 3 Cimi. The next 3 Cimi will not occur until 260
(or 13×20) days
have passed. This 260-day cycle also had good-luck or bad-luck
associations connected with each day, and for this reason, it became
known as the ``divinatory year.''
The ``years'' of the Tzolkin calendar are not counted.
When did the Tzolkin start?
Long Count 13.0.0.0.0 corresponds to 4 Ahau. The authorities agree on
this.
What is the Haab?
The Haab was the civil calendar of the Mayas. It consisted of 18
``months'' of 20 days each, followed by 5 extra days, known as
Uayeb. This gives a year length of 365 days.
The names of the month were:
1. | Pop | 7. | Yaxkin | 13. | Mac | ||
2. | Uo | 8. | Mol | 14. | Kankin | ||
3. | Zip | 9. | Chen | 15. | Muan | ||
4. | Zotz | 10. | Yax | 16. | Pax | ||
5. | Tzec | 11. | Zac | 17. | Kayab
6. | Xul | 12. | Ceh | 18. | Cumku |
In contrast to the Tzolkin dates, the Haab month names changed every
20 days instead of daily; so the day after 4 Zotz would be 5 Zotz,
followed by 6 Zotz ... up to 19 Zotz, which is followed by 0 Tzec.
The days of the month were numbered from 0 to 19. This use of a 0th
day of the month in a civil calendar is unique to the Maya system; it
is believed that the Mayas discovered the number zero, and the uses to
which it could be put, centuries before it was discovered in Europe or
Asia.
The Uayeb days acquired a very derogatory reputation for bad luck;
known as ``days without names'' or ``days without souls,'' and were
observed as days of prayer and mourning. Fires were extinguished and
the population refrained from eating hot food. Anyone born on those
days was ``doomed to a miserable life.''
The years of the Haab calendar are not counted.
The length of the Tzolkin year was 260 days and the length of the Haab
year was 365 days. The smallest number that can be divided evenly by
260 and 365 is 18,980, or 365×52; this was known as the Calendar
Round. If a day is, for example, ``4 Ahau 8 Cumku,'' the next day
falling on ``4 Ahau 8 Cumku'' would be 18,980 days or about 52 years
later. Among the Aztec, the end of a Calendar Round was a time of
public panic as it was thought the world might be coming to an
end. When the Pleiades crossed the horizon on 4 Ahau 8 Cumku, they
knew the world had been granted another 52-year extension.
When did the Haab start?
Long Count 13.0.0.0.0 corresponds to 8 Cumku. The authorities agree on
this.
Did the Mayas think a year was 365 days?
Although there were only 365 days in the Haab year, the Mayas were
aware that a year is slightly longer than 365 days, and in fact, many
of the month-names are associated with the seasons; Yaxkin, for
example, means ``new or strong sun'' and, at the beginning of the Long
Count, 1 Yaxkin was the day after the winter solstice, when the sun
starts to shine for a longer period of time and higher in the
sky. When the Long Count was put into motion, it was started at
7.13.0.0.0, and 0 Yaxkin corresponded with Midwinter Day, as it did at
13.0.0.0.0 back in 3114 B.C. The available evidence indicates that the
Mayas estimated that a 365-day year precessed through all the seasons
twice in 7.13.0.0.0 or 1,101,600 days.
We can therefore derive a value for the Mayan estimate of the year by
dividing 1,101,600 by 365, subtracting 2, and taking that number and
dividing 1,101,600 by the result, which gives us an answer of
365.242036 days, which is slightly more accurate than the 365.2425
days of the Gregorian calendar.
(This apparent accuracy could, however, be a simple coincidence. The
Mayas estimated that a 365-day year precessed through all the seasons
twice in 7.13.0.0.0 days. These numbers are only accurate to 2-3
digits. Suppose the 7.13.0.0.0 days had corresponded to 2.001 cycles
rather than 2 cycles of the 365-day year, would the Mayas have noticed?)

Re: The World will end September 21,2012!!!
The Mayan calander and end of world prediction has been very grossly mis-interpreted over the years.
The Mayans were huge astronomers, and they had a completely different calendar to us. They counted the year in 13 moon cycles give or take a day or 2 each year, but they had it figured out - much the same as our modern Gregorian calander does with the extra day each leap year - it balances it out.
Their whole civilisation was centred around the stars and mathematics, hence astrology.
It is only in recent years that the calander system they used has been successfully translated into a modern date (thats your answer Dad lol) and previously it was thought to be a date I forget in the 80's, then again at the millenium, and now 2012 (among many others). That is the origin of the countless "end of the world" predictions and why the date always changes.
However, it has absolutely nothing to do with the world ending, but it has been mixed up with religious ideas of doomsday, or Judgement day, and misinterpreted as such. What they believed was that when the planets were aligned in such a way, as they will be in 2012, something major will change the world. There are no negative or positive connotations as to what kind of change.....just a new age if you like. I guess thats as good as time as any to stop counting forward for the Mayans!
Its a subject I am fascinated with and have been for years, for various reasons, think thats why I waffled a bit lol
Anyway, nice link...it is a reach but at this point anything is possible

They do speculate that the alignment can bring about major climate changes on our planet. This is one of many similar proficies.
The Mayans did predict the blackhole in the center of the Milkyway but I belive they called it a black monster, a God that would eat the world.

Sorry, I'd heard it was the winter solstice - December 21, 2012.
And anyway, it's not the end of the world, just the beginning of the Age of Aquarius - the end of the Age of Pisces. Duh.

Good point. Lost is a huge smorgasbord of philosophy and religion that just about anything is possible. And quite frankly I’ve been waiting for some kind of weird astronomical anomaly episode for a while. I remember an old post where someone brought up the fact that Claire is an astrologer and would, you think, make Aaron an astrological chart. While doing so she just might notice something weird about the positions of the stars and planets.

Vinny, point well taken! I believe the 'Valenzetti Equation' does address this very issue, in a vague sense. Unfortunately, too little is known about the dynamics of the Equation, and what effect it is specifically addressing. Taken in that sense, it could involve many things.
Lateralus, I recall the post you are referring to. I guess Claire won't be making that chart for Aaron after all.

THS said:
With you on the doomsday theory hatred (as so many others have appropriately stated). They do tend to be silly. Though I would personally love to be in a cult group at the moment where their supposed world doesn't end.
Must be, like, the ultimate anti-climax to a party. Everyone stands around with the world blatantly not ending. . . they look to their leader with a mixture of distrust and disappointment and they say, "Now what?"
Indeed.
Anyway, my other point is that you bracketed "global warming" alongside the end of the world. The whole subject of modern day 'global warming' politics is one that can get me into rant mode at the drop of a hat ("They're lying to me!" is my usual foam-mouthed response at my television) but I'll spare you the rhetoric.
Anyway.
Amidst all of this Mayan calendar global warming end of the world malarkey, there was a Lost theory posted! And talk of the end of the world is incredibly relevant. Our beloved 4 8 15 16 23 42 numbers have been dubbed The Valenzetti Equation that predicts the end of humanity after all! Will that equation relate to the Mayan calendars prediction? Probably not. But that doesn't take a doomsday prediction off the table for Lost.
I hate doomsday theories unless they involve global warming or something scientifically proven.
AC, I personally would LOVE to hear your thoughts on global warming politics.....there is a science and physics section it might fit into quite nicely.....or philosophy and society depending on your stance

Nice I'm going to read that in a sec, AC. One thing that always gets me about these doomsday theories is that they're always within ten years or so.
Thats to scare people. If something was proven to wipe out the human race in a couple of hundred years or so, then I would be much more inclined to believe it than one that says the world will end tommorow.
The only reason that the doomsdays are so close to scare people.

Thank you all for talking me down.
I have postponed the building of my bomb shelter.
I remember my senior year in high school, Nostradames had supposily predicted the end of days. They did not come but my girlfriend and I had a grand night one I will always remember.

Yes, and I recall May 5, 2000 was supposed to be the end of the world as well. It wasn't, as I recall anyway.
