The How to move an island rant

As much as I enjoyed the series finaleand as much as thought it was the most action packed one yet. I thought the ideas were a little rushed. Movin the island, did they think about that enogh. No. Here's why.
A tsunami is a series of waves created when a body of water, such as an ocean, is rapidly displaced. Yeah, already knew that, but I thought i'd put it in just in case.
I want to work out the rough volume of the island. So we'll say its 10 miles in diameter. So using Pi x R squared we can work out that, 5 miles squared is 25 miles x 3/roughly pi = 75 square miles. And even if the island is only two meter deep then the island is still 150 cubic meters. Thats a lot. If the island moved then all the water would rush in and bounce out again causing a massive wave. Ive heard that the tsunami reached around the Earth 3 times, obviously it wasnt as powerful when it reached Britain and America.
But anyway moving the island would have enormaous geographical consequences.
The next thing, if you move anything it has to go somewhere else. Now obviously it couldnt have gone in space or something stupid like that as Locke survived on it for at least a while. Everysingle piece of the world is mapped and satalite pictured (its a word) all the time. So it might seem a little suspicious if suddenly an island appears that no-on has ever seen before in the middle of an ocean. Somewhere where there hasnt been anything for hundreds of years has an inhabited island in the middle of it now. Strange? no.
Moving the island would have huge historial consquences.
Finally, if the island was moved it must have been done instantly

Presumably Ben moved the island with his 'frozen donkey wheel' and my guess is that moving a wheel a meter moves the island a hundred miles or so. It took Ben about twenty seconds to move the wheel so if the island move a couple of hundred miles in a matter of seconds, this sounds stupid but, wouldnt the people on there ... fall off. The island moves about 300 miles per second, imagine the g force those on the island would feel, they couldn't survive something moving that fast and that far.
Moving the island would have major scientificical consequences.
Ok thats all folks, thats how to move the island, bend the logics of geography, the events of history and the laws of physics.

Wait a minute...you mean this couldn't really happen? Thanks a lot. Please do not post any theories regarding Santa Clause, the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny (or the time-traveling Easter Bunny)
You are pretty much spot-on with this one---except (always there is an exception)
If the random shape of the island is what dissapeared then you are correct, the water rushing in to fill the void the island once occupied would casue a tremendous disturbance in the surface of the ocean and, perhaps a tsunami.
But if the area that dissapeared was a perfect sphere then perhaps the energy of the water rushing in uniformly would cancel itself out as the sphere collapsed.
Or the two may be reversed.
You also forgot to metntion that the air the island displaced would come rushing inward and when it met, would casue basically a disturbance and shockwave like one made by an atomic bomb! This is why you hear thunder, Lightning basically destroys the air it travels through and when the bold dissapears, the air rushes in to fill the space. when the air walls on opposite sides of the bolt meet, it causes the thunderclap. now imagine that happening with an area as large as the island!

I also have problems getting my head around the island moving. I still think it went underwater, but was transported in a flash other than actually travelling downwards. Think "Beam me down Scotty!"

Anyway, I'm reserving judgement on the 'realistic' quality of moving an Island until I find out more about how it was done, and where it was moved to. Though I liked MSHLs point about the perfect circle negating tidal waves.

great rant. I agree with basically everything you said stickman. I would just add that one things Lost has gotten good at is making basically rational people participating in the willing suspension of disbelief. It is needed for all fiction, but some fiction requires even more. My bet is we don't even learn more about how the island moves, we'll just learn where it is, and be left to believe that it got there because Ben turned the donkey wheel. We already know turning the wheel caused Ben end up in Tunisia. Is this why Yemi's plane was on the island?
