Smoke in a snow globe Empty Smoke in a snow globe

Post by SunburnedPenguin Mon May 19, 2008 3:43 pm

I have often wondered if the island is in some kind of bubble. I know this isnt a new idea, but bare with me Smile

There are a lot of references to this - on the cover of Walts comic, the snow globe refrences etc. So what if the elctro-magnetic properties of the island have created some kind of force-field? The Earth has a massive electro-magnetic field caused by the properties of the core, that protects the earth from the radiation of the sun. Without this field, there would be no life.

Smoke in a snow globe Bshttp://www.astro.wisc.edu/~burkhart/bs.gif

So....what if the magnetic properties of the island, cause its own field? This would create an environment protected from certain elements of the Earth - perhaps metaphysical aswell as physical. Could even have an effect on the time/space of the island. A mini-world inside a world with its own laws of physics.

A field of this kind could also prevent certain elements leaving the island, such as the souls/spirits of the dead. Now i'm not suggesting ghosts - but a different kind of energy. An energy without form or any kind of memory of the life before, just energy. Perhaps over the years, every person who has died on that island has added their own energy to this.

The Dharma Initiative would have been very interested in this kind of phenomena. I think they already knew about the healing properties of the island and other properties, but discovered this side effect of the magnetic field after their arrival. Maybe they did experiment with it, exploit it, even learn to control it. They could have altered it somehow during their experiments giving it form and some level of self-awareness, programming it as a security system to protect them from outside influences searching for the island.

I'm pretty sure that over the course of the show and as more people have died on the island, the smoke monster has increased in size and verocity. Im guessing that after the purge, the smoke monster went from a reliable and stable security system to an unpredictable and dangerous monster, as the energy of all those people were thrown into the mix. So the Others built their sonar-fence, to protect themselves from thier Frankenstiens Monster.

This would explain a lot of smokies behaviour, especially how it is able to manifest itself in the form of the dead.

I like the thought of smokey abzorbing the forms or spirits of the dead, maybe there stuck inbetween life and death and smokeys able to channel them somehow. As far as a bubble around the island I have belived this for awhile with the 325 hole created by the blackrock entering the island.

I go with the bubble around the Island as well. I think this is what causes the time difference as you travel through the bubble. I also think the way time runs inside the bubble causes the direction of the 'mind travel' Minklowski approaching the island had his present self travelling backwards, Des leaving the island had his past self travelling forward.

You wrote all this while waiting or a bacon sandwitch! Hes a genius. ]

Wow this theory is amazing, I know that i'm easily swayed by arguments and opinions. Wow. I could just imagine Daniel explaining the first bit to Jack.

Well structured, good base idea, well explained, not too complicated, believable, PICTURES!!. Its a brilliant theory.

Go to the debate page, Lojozz is making a debate club here. And the first debate might be about smokeys origins. You should challenge him.

Yeah, I think the Island has to be somehow contained and, as Lojozz says, this bubble idea allows some form of explanation for the time discrepancies off-Island and on-Island.

If the Island can be moved, well, can we then think of it as more like the 'bubble' moving, and just taking the Island with it?

That would make me think that there def are powers that be and not just some mystical island, that is if a bubble was created around the island and moved it on its own. interesting...

I've thought similar things before, as far as trapped energy (the Whispers) and the "snow-globe" idea. I also agree whole-heartedly with the idea of bacon between two slices of bread. I think this was the first post I read here that made me hungry.

Wow SP, really well put. I had heard many bubble theories, but my eyes just kind of glazed over. But yours had an actual picture! That made me sit up in my chair and pay attention!

Your theory is so easy to understand, except for the souls not being able to escape when people die. I am not sure if I can buy that part. Maybe it will take a suspension of disbelief on my part...because, yeah, I haven't had to do that yet while watching Lost. lol!

I have always thought that the bubble idea worked, because it could be easily explained......"you see Jack, the island is surrounded by an electromagnetic field that generates a bubble, when passing through that bubble at certain places, you may experience a time anomaly."
