Maybe the clue was in the pilot
(Hi my name is Nav and I'm a lost theories refugee - that sounds a bit like alcoholics anonymous! Anyway found this site through Angelo's website and wanted to post my only theory that had any impact... )
The much thought over and agonisingly annoying of all questions, is the apparant ‘big’ clue in the pilot.
Perhaps we as viewers have interpreted the producers comment of the clue in the wrong way. To paraphrase what the producers said, we were told that there is a clue in the pilot.
What if by pilot, they didn’t mean pilot episode but rather the actual pilot himself - the hero who flew the plane?!?!
I know I may be clutching at straws but now that season 4 has developed, we have learnt a little bit more about the pilot of flight815, namely the fact that he wasn’t even supposed to be flying the plane in the first place!!!
Directly from lostpedia : Seth married his childhood sweetheart at nineteen years of age, and always wore their wedding ring, according to Frank Lapidus. His official Oceanic Airlines photo shows that he once had a mustache. For an unknown reason, he replaced Frank Lapidus as the pilot of Flight 815. (“Confirmed Dead”)
Seth “Six hours in, our radio went out; no one could see us. We turned back to land in Fiji. By the time we hit turbulence, we were a thousand miles off course. They’re looking for us in the wrong place.”
To be honest guys, I’m not really sure what I am getting at, I just feel that there maybe more to Seth Norris than originally thought of. Here’s some of my wild musings:
I know I’m going to sound completely barmy but I’ve got that Friday feeling so here goes…the producers intended Jack to die in the pilot and it was supposed to be his body on top of the tree. Perhaps Jack has taken the role of Seth within Lost. This leads me to a really wacky thought - future Jack is desperate to ‘go back’ to the island. We know he has taken flying lessons and maybe he learns about the runway being built. Somehow and I know it’s a really big “somehow” but it was Jack behind the actual plane crash. I don’t really want to go with the whole this is the second time Jack has been on the island, so I am going to offer something which I think is a new theory. Jack is unknowingly a double agent…you’re all going to give me - 1 now aren’t you! But after listening to the producers comments on the season 2 opener, the producers say that man of science/man of faith is in reference to the two sides of Jack. And as the show has progressed we have definetly seen two sides to Jack, most strikingly when he tried to kill John. I think Jack has moments when he blacks out and doesn’t remember what he is doing - remember he blacked out during the plane crash, and probably blacks out every time he’s on a bender!
Ok, im going to stop rambling now and please I would love to hear all your comments.

- Seth was killed instantly by the monster, no photo’s taken or any form of scanning by the smoke.
- Seth tried his luck with claire before the flight (I don’t blame him), even though he is a devoted husband accoring to Frank. (deleted scene)
- Seth’s dead body is still chilling out on top of a tree somewhere, and we may still see a spooky version of Seth in the form of a vision.
- Seth wasn’t supposed to be flying the plane.

Re: Maybe the clue was in the pilot
Well, it has been noted that Seth Norris's name is an anagram of 'Senior Other', they did a similar play on words with Ethan Rom (Other Man) in series 1 so it could be that Ben pulled strings to make Seth the pilot so that he could guide the plane to the island, Or it could mean the producers are just messing with us by giving him a name with that double meaning.
As for Jack, in my opinion Jack is an ego-maniac, he performed that one miracle surgery on Sarah (or did the island do it?) and since then hes been trying to top that. He always has a plan to save everybody and when it doesn't work out or somebody like Locke throws a spanner in his works, he reacts very badly. I think that accounts for Jacks occasionally extreme behaviour.

Re: Maybe the clue was in the pilot
OK Van, firstly the clue in the pilot! The producers said that there is something in the pilot that will prove that they knew where they where going with the story from the get go. This has been translated to there is a big clue in the pilot episode. I think it has been blown out of all proportion.
That said it does not change your theory so onto that. I agree there is more to Seth Norris and I think he was paid/ordered to have the plane at that location at that time, but that’s for another theory of mine.
I don't think Jack is a double agent and I really can't buy him being behind the crash. I dislike his character and would actually welcome a twist like that (I think) I just see no evidence for it.

Let's get even more literal and have Jack do an autopsy on Seth Norris, to see if the clue is really IN the pilot.

Re: Maybe the clue was in the pilot
i tend to agree with lojozz. i don't think the 'clue' from the pilot is likely to be one that can provide us with much insight right now in determining what is going on. i think it's going to be a situation where once all has been revealed we'll go back, see the 'clue' and think something like 'sheesh, that was totally not obvious, but i get what they meant' and we'll sort of regret the time we took picking apart that first episode (only sort of, though, as it is kind of fun to go back, pick things apart, and postulate!) :-)

Re: Maybe the clue was in the pilot
Actually, I had thought about that as well, as if they were using some clever word play. Certainly wouldn't put it past them. But I tend to think it's as LoJozz said, there's a detail in the pilot episode that points to the final destination of the storyline.

Re: Maybe the clue was in the pilot
I've always thought there were planted characters. Like the pilot for example, I think was working for Widmore maybe. Trying to find that island for him. That's why at the last second, he was chosen to fly that plane.
I also think that the flight attendant (I can't remember her name!) but the one who talked to Jack was an Other from the start. Now that she's with the Others, she just looks too comfortable there. Like she's always fitted in with them. I think there are a TON of plants in this show.
The psychic who got Claire on the plane, Libby I'm sure worked for Widmore since she gave Desmond that boat (tracking device?) and her being on flight 815, Sun's Dad, etc. I know there are more I just can't think right now lol

Re: Maybe the clue was in the pilot
Thank GOD! Someone told me there was no clue in the pilot. I thought there was. Thank you lojozz.
It was weird that the monster didnt scan him. All his victims have been scanned so far. My best guess is that the monster was just angry that a huge plane had just landed in his island.

JimReaper - Seth Norris is not an anagram of Senior Other.
The closest you can get to the same term: Is Snr Other
Sorry to be pedantic, but I do like to correct matters where I can! And as for the issue in the Pilot - oh man, the myth of 'the clue' is waaay bigger in the minds of certain Lost fans than it ever was intended to be by the creators. . .

I think the clue will be something as simple as the cut on Jacks arm. Its like the cut Ben has on his arm when he wakes up in the desert. simplicity folks. i think we do sometimes make too much of these little thing AC. but thats what makes it fun.
