Theories
Im on night shift at the moment which is when I write my dumbest posts and make emotional Lost vids etc.So sorry if this makes little or no sense to anyone else, but I thought I'd throw this out there anyway
I find the various titles to the theory sections a bit confuddling and off putting.
I know theres ways to figure if Ive read or commented on a theory before and I can check the posts that Ive read since I last signed in etc, but I don't always sign in on every visit.
Basically I think my laziness is causing me to miss a lot of theories and it could be helped if there was a daily notice in the portal stating the days new theories or something like that.
Also, I think the actual name of the theories thread could be toned down while we're in the off season.Visitors could be confused by the non spoilers for Uk title.
OK, sorry if this was rude, Im too tired to know.

Re: Theories
Good point about the title for the theories section, I'll have a look at changing that now.
As for the portal idea, there is a scrolling feed of the latest posts - I could have a look at making that bigger?
Thanks for your comments, not rude or dumb atall

Re: Theories
Thanks SP, its just that comments bump any thread so its hard to know if its a comment to a recent theory or an old one when you look at the scrolling feed. I know the board isn't so busy now that the season's over but when the theories start rolling in and are getting commented on all over the place...the scrolling feed for latest comments might actually send a theory down the page pretty quick if it gets no comments and busier theory threads are getting lots of comments.
Maybe a weekly post with links to the weeks theories if daily is too much? I think my problem might stem from my being used to the latest theories system on 'the other theory site', even though great theories were sent down the page quickly due to the constant posts, you still could see at a glance what had been posted since your last visit.

Re: Theories
WTF - I'm with you on this idea. I did make a request for something like this to SBP when we first came here, but I understood that there technical difficulties in making it work exactly the way I was specifying.
There's also this proposed 'move' in the pipeline, also. . . perhaps one of the benefits of the 'new home' will be the capacity for posts to be displayed in chronological order, regardless of when comments have been left.

Actually there is a method to view all posts since the last visit. Click on home and then on the screen is an option to view all posts since last visit

Stitch, yes, I know.
I use it.
But it shows ALL new posts - comments AND new threads. If someone left a comment on the very first theory left on this site, it would appear when you selected that option.
What we're discussing here is a facility to see just brand new threads/posts - not the posts that have recently been commented on.

Re: Theories
I kind of like the fact that the last commented post shows up on top. It kind of keeps the most interesting and most talked about posts on top. That is one of the reasons I didn't like LT.com. Even though you had a great post with lots of discussion, no matter how many people commented on it, it would be on page 2 or 3 within the day.
But if what you are suggesting are two options that say "Most Recently Commented" and "Most Recently Posted", I am all for that. That is the best of both worlds.

Iroc, agree completely.
But as I have said, I don't think it's as easy as it sounds here so I don't want this to sound like a grumbling demand to SBP. She's done great stuff here as is - so what I am discussing her is more of a 'wish list' item than an out and out request.

Re: Theories
At least in this format, the closest to what you're looking for is "Unanswered posts"... but with the 2-3 time zone user-base here, it's rare that something stays unanswered for long.
I use the "New since last visit" option every time I visit... but then again, I'm also stay logged in. Admittedly, as a moderator, I'm also kind of expected to read everything, even when the topic isn't something I have any interest in.
There is an answer within the search function, but alas, I don't think I know all the search tags to do what you're proposing. If I can figure it all out, it would be easy enough to put all those search tags into a button of some sort, since that's exactly how the other two functions work.
I'll get to hacking.

Re: Theories
OK, I might have just stumbled upon in... but I need a new thread posted by someone (not me) to test it. If someone is online right now, and can create a new thread (topic) in the Technical section, I'll be able to test my theory.

Re: Theories
Php is a bugger eh CF
I'm not keen on changing the forum so that new threads stay at the top regardless of comments like on LT, for the same reasons Irocz mentions.....but I can have a look and see if there is any way of creating a list automatically of new threads in the theories section, its theoretically possible, but we shall see

Re: Theories
Maybe you can figure out the issue in my search string. See New Topic for Caged Faraday. Maybe "topic" isn't the right term (but I also tried "thread").

Re: Theories
Yeah, I noticed that one before. It means some goofball wrote the search strings in the PHPbb archetecture... and therefore what should be "id=newtopics" could be "id=lazysearch", or something equally absurd. Alas, I can't find a list of the pre-coded search strings.

Re: Theories
Hi, Im back, sorry to start trouble I just thought that maybe you could put links to the most recent theories on the portal page.
Say the 10 most recent. That way it wouldn't affect the forum at all really.

Yeah that would be easier theoretically, but I would much rather automate it so that I dont have to remember to add new threads to a list all the time
