We have to go back....much much further
“We have to go BAAAAAAAAAACK!!”
Of course they do but not where we expect them to.
After viewing and re-viewing the new DHARMA video made by
Pierre Chang, I noticed
One significant word that keeps coming up: PURGE.
I don’t think the O6 have to go back to save the other
survivors. I think they have to go back
to stop the Purge from ever occurring. Evidence pointing to the Purge as being very
significant was all around in Season 4, especially with the unsettling
appearance of Horace Goodspeed. I am of
course assuming that The Others are not the “good guys” they claim to be, and
that the DHARMA really were on the verge of some critical scientific breakthrough
that would either save mankind or better humanity for all.
Perhaps the price for such an incredible discovery would be
the destruction of the island
Or an exploitation of its properties, something The Others
can ill afford.
The island is the Others’ home, their refuge, their religion
even. How far would you go to protect your
livelihood? Would you manipulate? Lie? Cheat? Betray? Murder?
Well The Others have done all these things and more to keep
the island safe and under their control.
Aside from merely being a place to live, the island also has its
mystical properties. Take Richard Alpert
for example. The man must be 200+ years
old, yet he doesn’t seem to age. I am
reluctant to refer to the island as a fountain of youth, but perhaps longevity
is just one of the many benefits of island life. The ability to “live forever” is a prize long
sought after. It is what religions
promise but fail to deliver proof of.
This could certainly explain The Other’s motivation and
obsession. Particularly Ben’s.
And to make sure the island stays in the right hands, Ben
has gone so far as to set Locke up as a patsy.
Ben never makes a move without a plan.
So its not unreasonable to believe that he “pretend sacrificed” himself by
turning the wheel. He did this because
he already knows exactly what is going to happen on that island….and he’s
counting on it. He’s counting on The
Others and the 815 survivors blaming Locke for everything that will inevitably
go wrong. Ben will look like the “good
guy” in the Others’ eyes again, don’t you think?
But Locke is my man.
I feel confident that at some point
in Season 5, he will realize that he has been manipulated again. He will find a
way off that island to rally the O6 to action. They must stop Ben from coming
to power. They must help "reconstitute" the DHARMA Initiative They must stop the
Purge. It is the only way to save
everyone.
“The needs of the many
outweigh the needs of the few…or the one.”

But if they go back and stop The Purge that means The Others don't reign over the Island and thus the events we have seen following the crash of Oceanic 815 won't transpire and so no one will be able to go back to stop The Purge that didn't happen and then the space-time continuum will go kaput and somewhere, somewhen, a man with white hair will exclaim, "Great Scott!"

It may have been a plan Ben came up with while he was tooling around Tunisia, rather than have had it when he left the Orchid Station.
And as for Paradox... I see Angelo's very humourously made point, but I don't think that level of paradox exists in the LOST world. If it did, I think the universe would have imploded already.
Prevent the purge is a reasonable goal... at least for Pierre and company. And depending on how the Others came to the island in the first place, preventing the purge may be more of a quantum correction than a quantum disturbance.
