Your funeral song?
OK, I know this is in poor taste but my friends have been talking about their choices for funeral songs so I thought I'd extend the topic to you guys.
What do you choose as your funeral song. One of my sisters wants Run by Snow Patrol and my ditzy sister wants like a prayer by Madonna(I bet you thought I was the ditzy sister)....Im leaning towards Do You Realize? by the flaming Lips...But its not set in Stone....you only get one shot at this
So whats your song? Hoping for something fun from you guys ..
Im on Absolut Mandarin Vodka tonight, so apologies in advance if this thread offends.

Amazing Grace and Scotland the Brave done to bagpipes. I had a local piper all lined up too just in case I didn't make it through my bone marrow transplant.
But I had also thought of some upbeat and inspirational songs that could be played in the background while people were being seated though I can't recall what they were.
It was comforting to have this stuff decided ahead of time. It knew it would make things easier on my family and it created some serenity in an uncertain time in my life.

Bless you, I didn't mean to bring up bad memories for you. It is something we all think about though, I suppose. And choosing your own music gives you a small sense of control. Bagpipes are awesome

Thanks and (((HUGS))) WTF. They were challenging times but I have no bad memories. I was overwhelmed by the love and support I received. I was and am ready to "go" now (well not now now) but that isn't up to me. I'm not afraid of death and actually look forward to what is next. The only thing I don't like is pain - no pain please!

When my brother in law Patrick past away, the priest gave a nice sermon at the funeral ceremony. You had to know Patrick, he was a little irreverand and liked to tweak the nose of authority. He was also a religious man.
As the pawl bearers beagan to lift his casket to carry it out of the church, music began. It was Norman Greenberg's, Spirit in the Sky. The priest began rocking as he walked, the pawl bearers rocked as they walked and the people all smiled. I know Patrick loved it

Consideration by Reef....its been my "funeral song" for years now, it sums up how I feel about my life (so far) perfectly and I think it carries a good message. But then my playful side would also like something like fire starter by the Prodigy haha (I want to be cremated)
Tracker, I love the image your post conjures up, funerals can be so sad its great to make people smile on your way out

Re: Your funeral song?
I suppose I have a very different view on the "Funeral" situation. I do not plan on having one at all. No service or viewing, except a Private Mass for family and a few friends. All I want is the Last Rights, and I'm outta this place!
My near death experience has altered my viewpoint, although I honour peoples choices. I am glad you posted this WTF! I enjoy the choice of songs people have selected. It is after all, how we view ourselves and our contributions to life.
Sham, I absolutely love 'Amazing Grace'. It is my favourite. I am surprised however, that you didn't choose this song, because if I had to have one, it would be happy. Beat you to the punch on this one, Shammalamaman!

WTF: From what you have shared with me about your sister, it could be much worse! She could have chosen "Like a Virgin".
If I do have any words on a simple cross, it would be: "I laughed more than I cried"

I have told my family that' I Hope you Dance' by Lee Ann Womack, would be my song of choice.

Another thing that was done at my brother-in-laws graveside service last year, which I really thought was nice, was to give everyone a helium filled ballon to release at the same time. (If they chose to)
To see them soaring skyward was a serene moment for me.

When it comes to death, more to the point when it comes to my death, that's a vibe I am totally onboard with.
I haven't thought of a funeral song. I can't decide if I'd want something that would make everyone super-sad, or make them grin like monkeys.

Re: Your funeral song?
For me, I think it would all depend on what time of my life I die. If I died prematurely at a young age I would probably want Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. It's a really sad song and is definitely appropriate for anyone who dies long before their time. Plus, I think Clapton wrote it after his young son died unexpectedly. Even if I went to a funeral of a total stranger I would get emotional if that song came on.
But, if I live a long, great life, I would definitely want a party song so everyone can celebrate and remember my life, which has always been a party anyway. Maybe something by Jimmy Buffet.....

Re: Your funeral song?
This topic is a bit of a downer BUT I think that I would prefer no music really, especially any sentimental depressing tune to nake people feel more sad.
But if I had to choose some songs I would prefer something to make the people there smile and or laugh, like songs that all my friends know I like, like Start of Something New or Breaking Free from High School Musical.
Then again if I was to choose emotive I would have to choose Aloha 'Oe from the Lilo and Stitch soundtrack. A song that Lilo's sister Nani sings on their last night together.
Or not a song but some dialogue from Beauty and the Beast. This occurs after the storming of the castle and after Gaston stabbed the Beast in the back:
Beast: You- You came back.
Belle: Of course I came back. I couldn't let them... Oh, this is all my fault. If only I'd gotten here sooner.
Beast: Maybe it's better... it's better this way.
Belle: Don't talk like that. You'll be all right. We're together now. Everything's going to be fine, you'll see.
Beast: At least... I got to see you... one last time.
Better than a song.
Anyway enough of this post. It really is a depressing thing to think about.

Re: Your funeral song?
If I wanted a really sad funeral where I could still make people cry after I was dead, then I would choose Motion Picture Soundtrack by Radiohead. Anyone who's heard that I'm sure will agree that it was made for funerals.
But I probably would go with something like 'Strawberry Fields' - The Beatles. Its not sad, but not too cheerful for a funeral, anyway I think I should wait at least a few more years before planning my funeral.
