A question open for discussion ...
Long have I wondered about The Black Rock and its captain, Magnus Hanso.
Supposedly, he died on the island but we all know things that "die" there don't stay dead for long.
But that is a another topic entirely.
My question is this: If THe Black Rock arrived on Island in the late 1800's (LONG before the Orchid was ever built) how did his story get out (leading Alvar Hanso to aid in the creation of the DHARMA Initiative)? Do you suppose the Island allows one to time-travel without DHARMA technology?

Possibly, I`ve read that the island may travel thro time and space on it`s own but Darma harnesed these powers through technology.

Whenever I hear "Time and Space" I think of that brainwashing video they had Karl watching and how when you played it backwards it said "Only fools are enslaved by time and space" over and over and over

Michael and Walt left the Island without Dharma technology. So long as you stick to the right bearing, it seems you can just sail away. . .

Sure... but then the big question is, when you do, do you have any idea when and where you'll end up?AngeloComet wrote:Michael and Walt left the Island without Dharma technology. So long as you stick to the right bearing, it seems you can just sail away. . .

Hi Molly,
I think his story got out from the Black Rock journal, which Charles Widmore bought.
I know that may not make sense, as we only see Widmore buying that journal in 1996, but...
Transcript from The Constant:
"The Black Rock set sail from Portsmith England on March 22, 1845 on a trading mission to the kingdom of Siam, when she was tragically lost at sea. The only known artifact of this journey is the journal of the ship's first mate, which was discovered among the artifacts of pirates on the Ile Sante-Marie off the coast of Madagascar seven years later. The contents of this journal have never been made public, or known to anyone outside the family of the seller, Tovard Hanso."
So that Journal with Magnus Hanso's writings was found in 1852. We don't know the reason for the sale in 1996, but that leaves 144 years of it being somewhere, for someone, no doubt the Hanso family, to read or use.
I would very much like to know how the pirates got a hold of it!

I think the time travelling properties were established loooooong before Dharma (hense the hyrogliphics and the 4 toed statue) i think Dharma simply heard rumours of the island, and together with the journal found it, harnessed the powers of the island and experimented on them, and used the time-travelling/worm-hole harnessing devise for their own advancement.

Re: A question open for discussion ...
Good question Molly. Maybe the answer is the journal that was found. From Lostpedia:
The Black Rock ledger was the journal of the first mate of the Black Rock sailing vessel. It is a thick, worn leatherbound volume with yellowed pages and the word "LEDGER" gilt on the spine.
To the outside world, the ledger is the only surviving artifact of the final voyage of the Black Rock,
which was thought to be lost at sea following its departure from
Portsmouth, England, March 22, 1845 on a purported trading mission to
the Kingdom of Siam. The ledger was discovered in 1852 among the
artifacts of pirates on Île Sainte-Marie, an island off the coast of Madagascar that at the time was a notorious pirate haven. It eventually came to be owned by Tovard Hanso.
The contents of the ledger were never made public and were
unknown to anyone outside the Hanso family, until the ledger was sold
at a Southfield's auction in 1996 as lot #2342. The ledger sold for £380,000 to bidder #755, Charles Widmore.

This is very simple, Alvar Hanso bought back his own journal at an auction in 1996.

So it is your thought that Charles Widmore is actually Alvar Hanso?
I'm not sure I follow that line of thinking.

Re: A question open for discussion ...
I was checking out lostpedia about the Black Rock and saw something i had forgoten about.
From The Lost Experience:
According to articles revealed by Rachel Blake, the Black Rock disappeared in 1881, on a return voyage from a gold mining operation in the South Indian Ocean
And then the pirates get ahold of the ledger in 1852.
Now i don't like any time travel theories, But this got my attention.
What if it did disapear in 1881, get zapped back in time to 1845 so that the journal would be found in 1852. That could explain the dynamite on board too.(dyanamite not being invented untill 1866.)
