The Crash (A Question) Empty The Crash (A Question)

Post by SmokinMonster Fri Aug 15, 2008 12:22 am

Hey guys!

Something has been eating away at the back of my mind lately.

Have we actually seen any scenes of the plane making impact with the island?

There have been spectacular scenes of the plane breaking up in mid-air from the perspective of The Losties and The Others, but as far as I can recall no scenes of the plane hittting the ground.

Please tell me if I am mistaken.

I have a feeling that certain Losties were placed where they came round.

The tail section crash - as depicted in The Other 48 Days (Season 2) showed plane pieces hitting the water and the beach. And when some of the tailies were in the water they could see the tail section sinking below the depths.

So, to that end, I would forget the 'placed' idea and just take it as read that the plane really did break apart in mid-air with those people inside and all of them landed on or near the Island!

There is a part in Hitchcock's thriller North By Northwest where Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) and The Professor (Leo G. Carroll) an agent representing a branch of of the United States Government are or the tarmac headed for a plane. They are in a heated and important conversation about Roger and his love interest's role in matters of espionage when the noise of a plane's engine actually cuts out a portion of the conversation.

You can see them talking and know important things are being said but can't hear a damn word. It absolutely maddening and it is exactly what Hitchcock intended. We are still left wondering what was said in that brief moment. It's a brilliant story telling device that keeps us engaged and our focus set squarely on the story in an attempt to piece together what might have been said and figure out just what the hell is going on. Sound familiar?

If you haven't seen the movie you are missing out on a masterpiece! In my mind it is the pinnacle of Hitchcock's directing career. It also has a fantastic musical score. Here is a nice tribute video.

Shamballa, they showed N by NW about a month ago on Turner Classics, I wonder if we were watching at the same time. It might be a sign of how far down the rabbit hole I've gone, but I was thinking about lost the entire time while watching it, specifically watching Carey Grant work through someone else's plot, a party to a plot secretly controlled by other forces.

Anyway the cinematic technique you refer runs throughout the french nouvelle vague/cinema verite (accent ague)...I cant think of a Godard film I've seen where it isn't used. Cool that you pointed it out.

As far as Hitchcock pinacles go, I vote for Vertigo.

Yep, you may be right. It was about a month ago that I watched it on TCM. They had practically a whole day devoted to Hitchcock. I think they recently aired Vertigo but I missed it. It has been awhile since I have seen it.

Molly, the comment was intended as banter; I dont think it's fair to label it an insult. Sorry.

However it is kind of insulting to me that you think I would base my pick on mere popularity.Smile

I would have put The Birds dead last. I always thought that was a stupid movie. I mean, come on scary birds? Your 1st choice of Rear window was great. Now that movie was good!

IMO Vertigo was pretty good too, but what the hell do I know?

I'm surprised "The 39 Steps" hasn't been mentioned. It's some of his very early work. There have been a couple remakes and there is one in the works.

Smoke-monster

It is a very good question, and has bugged me for ages. I have always been a bit puzzled too as to whether anyone was in the piece that the pilot was in. I know they call it the cockpit, but to me the cockpit is just that, that very small part at the front of the plane where the pilot sits, but the wreckage in the jungle is much bigger than that and had a line of windows if I remember right.

Can you remember where Charlie was? wasn't he in the toilet in that cockpit coz thats where he went back to to look for his heroin? so what I want to know is, it always seemed as if everyone was on the beach, yet we know charlie was in the toilet when it crashed, was there anyone else in that part? how they did they get to the beach? and why were there no people or bodies around near Jack? and why would Charlie have gone BACK to get his drugs if that's where he crashed? someone please clear this up for me it makes my head hurt!

I think AC is right in that, with us having seen the tail section hit the water, (and also that the others as a third-party saw the plane break up in the air), it would require a huge and un-occams-razor-like explanation to change those facts, but there also seem to be many unanswered questions, but then again whats new!

Shambs, I am ashamed to say the only hitchcock films I have seen are Psycho & The Birds! they were both cracking, and the Birds left me with mixed feelings every time I was In Trafalgar Square, later re-inforced by the film 'The Core' but then the mayor banned the pigeons and I am now able to stroll through there unhindered by potential feathered felons.

LOL! I just read how that sounded!

Makes it sound like he issued them with ASBO's in court! haha

"M'lord, this is a heinous case of ornithological harassment, the defendant is a public menace on a daily basis, begging for scraps, invading people's space and getting people in a flap, and to top it off your worship, he sh*ts all over the place at will! I demand he been bannned henceforth from the area!"

What I meant to say was that the Mayor, Ken Livingstone, is famous here for going to war with the pigeons, and even hired two Harris Hawks to fly round Trafalgar square enforcing a no-fly zone for the pigeons!!! this is TRUE shambs! He eventually won this war by beaureaucratical means, i.e. he made it illegal for people to feed them , and no food...no pigeons!

Here is a BBC news link I found for ya: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/5392314.stm

lol banned the pidgeons! You do crack em up SC Very Happy

From what I remember, Charlie ran out of the toilet and strapped himself into a chair with seconds to spare. However, he did sit in the first seat he came to which would have been the foremost seat before the cockpit door, and these seats were clearly with the cockpit when Jack Charlie and Kate went looking for it. But I think that is merely a case of inconsistency than a clue.....maybe.....

You know, you guys have to quit reading my mind when it comes to your questions. I have only been on this site for a short few days and it seems to me as if everything I want to address in my "fake season 5" has been coming to light with you guys... Particularily the cockpit idea and how the writers have skirted that whole thing for quite some time now. I'm not stealing your ideas, I promise, but it is nice to know you guys think about the same things as me.

I will wait and see what happens before I forget the notion of them being placed thank you.

If I am fortunate enough to ever survive an air crash I hope I wake up on my back with no broken limbs and nothing more than a minor gash on my back, not to mention having avoidied all the deadly bamboo shoots that could have penetrated my vulnerable torso and vital organs.

Placed in my opinion.
