Horace dead 12 years?!?!?!? Empty Horace dead 12 years?!?!?!?

Post by MyStarbuckHatesLost Wed May 28, 2008 9:18 pm

We all heard the "vision" of Horace Goodspeed tell Locke that he had been dead 12 years and we wondered if that was a production error or the producers trying to tell us something since the purge took place 16 years prior in the Lost timeline, not 12.

Last night I happened to watch the 3rd season episode "Enter 77" where Locke, Kate and Sayid find Mikhail and the Flame station.

After Patchy treats and as he treats his wound in the station, Sayid questions him about why he is there, alone in the station. Mikhail tells him how he was recruited to join Dharma after he answered a newspaper article.

Sayid asks him how long ago that was and Mikhail answers 11 years ago! Not 15 or 16 years ago, but 11. Close enough to Horace's statement about being dead for 12 years to not be a coincidence.

Chances are that this takes production error off the table as an explaination as to why Horace says 12 years instead of 16.

But if the purge took place 12 years earlier then many things just do not fit, a prime example being Alex's age and her age at abduction (4 years prior to the purge?)

If anyone else has posted this and I missed it please forgive the duplication here.

Thoughts?

This works on the basis that Mikhail is telling the truth, which he might not be. It seems clear he definitely was never recruited to Dharma if he arrived 11 years previously - so maybe he was just telling the truth about having been there 11 years and just changed the basis by which he was recruited (perhaps by Mittelos rather than Dharma, for example).

Or maybe he was lying completely, and has been there much longer than 11 years. Or much less.

Either way, it's a nice catch but doesn't feel like enough. Although Horace's "12 years" presents its own anomaly outside of my idea that he became caught in the loop 12 years after his death, or Locke's dream was just not very factually accurate!

I have a theory about this.

In dream psycology, another person represents a part of the dreamer. For example dreaming about ones mother may simply be a dream about ones own mothering side.

So maybe Lockes dream about Horace was about a part of himself - the part that died 12 years ago when Locke was pushed out of the window.

The fact that Horace told him where to find his body doesn't negate this - Locke has a certain amount of foresight that he only seems to take notice of if it is told to him in a dream. So in his dream, Horace appeared to him to make him take notice, but it was not Horace nor a spirit of Horace, it was a manifestation of Lockes psyche given a form he would understand.

The same could be said for his dreams about Boone etc.

I didn't want to mention it.
